Despite never sharing an on-screen scene, Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford were aware of each other through Hollywood connections. One actor they both greatly admired, should the topic of acting ever come up, was James Cagney.
Clint Eastwood has often spoken about how much he admires James Cagney, who was the only actor he ever truly idolized. Eastwood once explained that he wasn’t a fan of anyone else, stating, “I was never a fan of one particular actor outside of James Cagney.” He felt that Cagney was perfectly suited for the movies, and the movies were made for him, calling it a “perfect match.”
Redford also holds Cagney in high esteem. When discussing actors he admired, Redford immediately cited Cagney, calling him “an incredible talent.”
Eastwood and Redford aren’t the only ones who admire Cagney. Throughout Hollywood history, many actors and directors have considered him a truly iconic performer.
