THIS IS SPINAL TAP Sequel Sets September Release Date, Will Include Elton John

Today, it’s common for ’80s and ’90s films to receive or have already received follow-up movies, but here’s an unexpected one! In May 2022, we found out that Rob Reiner will reunite with the original cast of his first film, “This Is Spinal Tap,” for a sequel titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” Apart from directing, Reiner will also reprise his role as director Marty DiBergi. Joining him are Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, and Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel. The original film is a timeless cult classic from that era, and it’s even part of the National Film Registry. The sequel, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” will hit theaters on September 12.

Rob Reiner gave a basic premise for the new film, saying the following:

I’ve resumed portraying Marty DiBergi once more. The band wasn’t pleased with the first movie. They felt I had unfairly criticized them, and this is an opportunity for me to make amends. Being a huge fan, it was disheartening to see their disappointment in the initial film. Upon learning they might reunite, I, as a teaching assistant at the Ed Wood School of Film Arts, postponed my tasks to chronicle this final performance.

Furthermore, a summary from the producers of Spinal Tap II: The Saga Continues reveals that “Spinal Tap II” chronicles the band’s reunion following a 15-year hiatus to perform what is said to be their last concert together.

2023 saw Reiner gracing RHLSTP alongside Richard Herring, where he shared some intriguing insights about the anticipated sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap,” titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” He mentioned that the original cast has reunited for this project. Additionally, he revealed that Elton John and Paul McCartney are set to make appearances in the sequel, as will Garth Brooks.

In a nutshell, “This Is Spinal Tap” was one of the pioneers in creating the mockumentary style. The writer and actor, Christopher Guest, built his career around this format, notably with movies like “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show”. Interestingly, the fictional band has played real concerts in the past, leaving fans eager to hear more of the film’s absurd tunes. We’re excited to see what songs they’ll perform now that they’re senior citizens attempting to relive their former glory in the sequel for “This Is Spinal Tap”.

As mentioned, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will release on September 12, 2025.
