Mandy Patinkin will play Odin in the upcoming live-action God of War series on Prime Video.
The actor, famous for his work in The Princess Bride and Homeland, will play Odin, the Norse god. While he won’t appear physically strong or traditionally god-like, appearances are misleading. Odin is the most powerful of the Aesir gods, a stern and controlling leader, and relentlessly pursues knowledge. He’s especially driven to learn about the future, becoming paranoid, manipulative, and even dangerous in his efforts to prevent Ragnarök – the end of the world in Norse mythology.
Along with Mandy Patinkin, Prime Video has revealed that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known for his role in The Deep, will portray the character of Thor in the upcoming series.

The series has been greenlit for two seasons and will be spearheaded by Ronald D. Moore, a highly respected showrunner known for his work on shows like Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Currently, the production team is preparing to film in Vancouver. The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy winner with credits including Shōgun and Fallout.
Ryan Hurst will play Kratos, the main character, and Max Parker will play Heimdall in the upcoming series. More cast members haven’t been announced yet. Following the success of its show Fallout, which is currently in its second season, Amazon is hoping God of War will be another popular series adapted from a well-loved video game.
The series centers on Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Throughout their travels, Kratos attempts to guide Atreus in becoming a worthy god, while Atreus encourages his father to embrace his humanity. The show is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions.
Casting Mandy Patinkin as Odin is a huge win for the show. He’s a talented, experienced actor who can handle both serious and funny moments, and Odin is a famously complicated character in Norse mythology. Viewers are excited to see how the series will blend the mythical aspects of the story with the central relationship between father and son, which is so important in the original game.
Mandy Patinkin seems like a great pick to play Odin. He’s a seasoned actor who can bring depth, power, and humanity to such an iconic role. Plus, casting Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor suggests we’ll see some compelling interactions between these Norse gods. I’m really looking forward to seeing how Prime Video adapts this video game into a TV series.
