As a longtime fan of The Office and someone who has spent countless hours laughing at the antics of Dunder Mifflin’s quirky characters, I must admit that the news about Rashida Jones not returning to the sequel series, The Paper, has left me feeling a bit disheartened. Karen Filippelli was an intriguing character who added depth to the show, and her absence will definitely be felt. However, as someone who has been in the industry for a while, I can understand Rashida’s decision not to reprise her role. After all, every actor craves new challenges and opportunities, and it’s essential to move forward in one’s career.
Rashida Jones has announced that she won’t be appearing in The Office’s upcoming spin-off series, “The Paper.” Unlike the older cast members, cameos are still a possibility for this new show. In an interview with The Playlist, Jones clarified that she won’t reprise her character, Karen, from the original nine-season sitcom where she played Jim Halpert’s ex-girlfriend during season five.
Discussing a potential comeback for the sequel, the actress from Parks and Recreation expressed, “I highly doubt I’ll just pop up unexpectedly, but I am definitely excited about it.” Later in the discussion, she mentioned, “The cast seems fantastic. And Greg Daniels is simply brilliant at casting and building those worlds. I can hardly wait to experience what it’s like.”
Besides Jones, Steve Carell and John Krasinski have stated that they won’t be featured in the upcoming series. During the red carpet event of the IF movie premiere, these actors discussed their non-involvement in The Paper. Carell, in his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, expressed, “I’ll be tuning in, but I won’t be making an appearance. It’s simply a fresh venture, and my character has no reason to appear in something like that. However, I’m thrilled about it. It seems like a fantastic idea. I adore the concept. I guess it’s set in a struggling newspaper company.”
Despite the Despicable Me actor claiming he won’t be part of the show, another well-known cast member, Rainn Wilson, has hinted at reprising his role in The Office spinoff, The Paper. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Wilson suggested, “I can’t imagine Dwight moving from Scranton to wherever they’re filming it in the Midwest.”
Instead, he persisted in stating that although Greg Daniels has consistently shown a forward-thinking approach and dedicates himself to the success of each project, he expresses regret because the series will be set somewhere other than Scranton.
Furthermore, the actor playfully suggested that The Office could spawn as many as seven different spin-offs, mimicking the format of the television series Law & Order.
For nearly a decade, starting from NBC, the sitcom known as ‘The Office’ graced our screens, boasting a principal ensemble that consisted of Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Ed Helms, Phyllis Smith, and numerous others.
The Office is available to stream on Peacock.
