As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming Downton Abbey film is one I eagerly await. The third installment promises to be a poignant tribute to the legendary Dame Maggie Smith, who graced our screens as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
In the upcoming “Downton Abbey” film, set to hit theaters on September 12, 2025, there will be an emotional homage paid to Dame Maggie Smith. Known for her portrayal of the sharp-witted Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, Smith sadly passed away on September 27. Her legacy includes a remarkable career filled with performances that will never be forgotten.
In an interview, executive producer Gareth Neame shared that the third Downton Abbey movie had originally been intended to pay homage to the character of Violet Crawley, who passed away in the 2022 film Downton Abbey: A New Era. However, with the sad news of Maggie Smith’s passing, this tribute now carries an even deeper significance.
Neame stated that the Dowager’s passing now seems much more profound,” he explained. “On-screen, you’ll observe the actors expressing their fictional characters’ sorrow for the family matriarch. However, this also mirrors the genuine feelings of the cast as they mourn the real-life matriarch of the production.
Neame stated that Smith was exceptional, labeling her demise as “the conclusion of an epoch.” He further remarked, “We shall never witness a personality like Dame Maggie Smith in the future.” The affection and reverence the team had for her will undoubtedly shine through in the upcoming film.
Smith’s career was highly esteemed, earning her three Emmy Awards for portraying Violet Crawley and two Oscars – one for ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ and another for ‘California Suite’. Additionally, she was nominated for an Oscar on several occasions, including for ‘Travels with My Aunt’, ‘A Room with a View’, and ‘Gosford Park’, a film scripted by Julian Fellowes, the creator of ‘Downton Abbey’.
This year, the movie written by Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis wrapped up filming. Featuring Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, and other recognizable actors, they were all affected by Smith’s passing. As a mark of respect, they joined forces to honor her memory, celebrating her unique talent and cherishing the warm connection she made on and beyond the screen.
In this last “Downton Abbey” film, we bid adieu to Violet Crawley and honor the exceptional life and career of Maggie Smith. Viewers can anticipate a poignant goodbye to a cherished character from the show, as well as the actress who breathed life into her.
