‘They Sort of Lose Their Sense of Self’: Yvette Nicole Brown Reveals Her Dad’s Battle With Alzheimer’s

As I reflect on Yvette Nicole Brown‘s journey, I find myself deeply moved by her selflessness and resilience. Twelve years ago, when my world was turned upside down by a similar diagnosis with my father, I could only imagine the strength it took for someone like Yvette to step up and care for her dad.

12 years ago, the life of American actress Yvette Nicole Brown took an unexpected turn when her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Initially, there were doubts about phone calls, but this led to a startling diagnosis that caused Brown to reflect on her connection with her father. In conversations with PEOPLE magazine, she shares memories of caring for her father and using those experiences as inspiration for her latest podcast.

“She shared with the media outlet her surprise and realization: ‘This will be the first time I have my dad living with me.’ She further explained, ‘He won’t fully comprehend this experience as I will.’ She went on to say, ‘Dementia is peculiar because at some stage they seem to lose their identity,’ expressing the challenge of having him around due to his condition, which unfortunately has no cure.”

Brown prioritized looking after her father over her work commitments, going so far as considering ending her contract for the NBC sitcom Community due to the conflicting demands of long working hours and caring for her dad. “Making this choice wasn’t a hard one for me,” she explains, discussing her decision to move her father into an assisted living facility. Brown disclosed that her father had suffered an accident which resulted in a fractured hip, necessitating surgery and rehabilitation. This injury made it difficult for him to walk.

She found it extremely hard and deeply distressing to hand over his care to others, but ultimately chose an assisted living facility to lighten her role as a caregiver and focus more on being his daughter. This change has allowed her to monitor him regularly through frequent visits. She also expressed her surprise at the bureaucratic hurdles involved in securing even basic care for a loved one. Sharing her struggles, she highlighted the challenges she faced in obtaining physical therapy and a wheelchair.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to embark on my upcoming podcast, “Squeezed.” Drawing upon my personal journey, I aim to connect with listeners worldwide, reassuring them that they’re not alone in their caregiving journey.
