These Repainted Halloween Masks Look Incredibly Life-Like

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of cheap and tacky plastic masks that seem to materialize only during Halloween. But this YouTube video by Steven Richter has truly transformed my perspective on these seemingly ordinary masks. With his masterful use of airbrushing, spray painting, and good old-fashioned craftsmanship, he’s taken the masks from a store-bought joke to something that could easily pass for movie props.

It’s common knowledge that the disposable plastic masks you find in stores aren’t masterpieces of design. They often have an odd smell too. The masks from Halloween shops mysteriously vanish right after Halloween, are usually poorly made, and just don’t look quite right. But in this YouTube video, Steven Richter manages to make those cheap plastic masks look real by using airbrushing and spray painting techniques.

In the video you see, Richter redesigns five masks from various sources such as Carnage, Venom, Skeletor, Wolverine, and Freddy Fazbear. By employing techniques like spray painting, airbrushing, adding extra plastic, and attaching fabrics, Richter elevates ordinary Spirit Halloween masks to a level that could easily be used on a movie set. In fact, they look that good!

In this video, Richter meticulously replicates three distinct Marvel Comics characters: Venom, Carnage, and Wolverine. To bring out greater depth and realism in Venom and Carnage’s masks, he employs airbrushing techniques. This is noticeable in the mouth areas of both characters. In contrast, for a more authentic film-like appearance, Richter carefully scratched and damaged the Wolverine mask after applying isopropyl alcohol to remove any artificial grime. He used a heated engraver for this process.

In addition to his work, Richter designs a mask for the primary villain from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe TV show, known as Skeletor. This mask is fashioned from a basic skeleton mask that he paints green, followed by covering it with a purple fabric to align with Skeletor’s color scheme.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve taken it upon myself to customize a Freddy Fazbear Halloween mask, the one that haunts my dreams from the chilling game, Five Nights at Freddy’s. To give it an authentic feel, I’ve covered the entire mask with soft fur fabric, mimicking the suit from the game. For the eyes, I’ve got creative and carved table tennis balls, enhancing their appearance with additional plastic to make them look eerily lifelike.

Richter’s self-titled YouTube channel is abundant with numerous captivating videos highlighting his extraordinary talent with props and sculptures. One such video is a time-lapse demonstration of crafting Godzilla, as seen in the film Godzilla vs. Kong.
