These Are The Only Superhero Films Ever to Score an Oscar

For a long time, superhero movies haven’t typically been Oscar favorites. While films from Marvel and DC often received nominations for things like special effects or makeup, they were rarely recognized for other achievements. However, that’s beginning to shift, and the Academy is now giving comic book movies more consideration. In fact, over ten superhero films have now won or received Oscar recognition.

The first superhero movie to win an Oscar was the 1977 film Superman, starring Christopher Reeve. It won an award for its visual effects and really raised the bar for superhero movies – well before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became popular. It wasn’t until 1989 that another superhero film received similar praise; Tim Burton’s Batman won the Oscar for Best Art Direction.

Superhero movies started gaining more recognition from award shows in 2005. Spider-Man 2, with Tobey Maguire, won an award for its visual effects, and Disney’s The Incredibles was honored with awards for Best Animated Feature and sound editing. These wins showed that comic book-based films were becoming increasingly prominent during awards season.

As a huge movie fan, I always think back to Heath Ledger’s incredible performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight as a real turning point for superhero films. It was amazing to see him win an Oscar, even posthumously, and the film’s sound editing was also top-notch. Then, Disney kept things going with Big Hero 6 winning Best Animated Feature a few years later. And it was cool to see the artistry in DC’s Suicide Squad recognized with an award for makeup and hairstyling the following year.

2018 was a significant year for superhero movies at the Academy Awards. Marvel’s Black Panther achieved a historic win, taking home three Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. Also that year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature, proving that animated superhero films could contend for top honors.

Joaquin Phoenix won an Academy Award for his role in the 2020 film Joker, becoming just the second actor to receive the honor for a performance in a superhero movie. Joker was also praised for its music. More recently, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won an Oscar for Best Costume Design, raising the total number of Oscars won by superhero films to 11. However, most of these wins have been in technical categories like costume design or music, rather than for acting or the film’s story.

Though superhero movies are getting more attention during awards season, they usually only win for things like visual effects or sound design. Very few acting performances or animated superhero films have been recognized with major awards, suggesting the Academy is still hesitant to fully accept them as serious contenders.
