‘There’s Never Been A Show…’: Hodor Actor Opens Up On Fan Backlash Over Game Of Thrones Finale

As a dedicated fan who has followed Game of Thrones since its inception, I must say that Kristian Nairn’s perspective as Hodor adds a unique and insightful angle to the ongoing debate about the show’s finale. Being part of the show itself, he had a firsthand experience of the characters and their development, which gives his opinion an authenticity that is hard to ignore.

As a devoted fan looking back five years after the final season, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the divisive ending of Game of Thrones. Recently, Kristian Nairn, the remarkable actor who brought Hodor to life, shared his views on the subject, and as a fellow enthusiast, I find it intriguing.

Recently, during an interview, Nairn shared his feelings of dismay over the fan reaction, indicating that overall, he was pleased with how the last season’s events unfolded.

Nairn responded to the criticism in a new interview with Screen Rant, explaining why he felt much of the fan outrage was undeserved. Reflecting on the scathing criticism given at the final season, Nairn stated he was saddened by the reaction. While he understood certain concerns, he did not believe the backlash was justified.

Nairn expressed his displeasure, saying, “I was truly let down by it,” he continued. “The show had been highly esteemed, and I feel it didn’t warrant the criticism. I don’t believe any ending could have pleased everyone.

Nairn acknowledged that fans had their own expectations for the series’ conclusion, particularly the character of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. However, he noted that no series can meet every viewer’s ideal finale.

He stated that he couldn’t think of any TV series throughout history, aside possibly from “Breaking Bad,” that had captivated viewers to such an extent with its characters.

Among many viewers, a significant point of debate was the transformation in Daenerys’ character trajectory during the final season, which took on a more ominous tone. Some felt this shift occurred too swiftly, but Nairn held a different opinion. In his view, indications of her descent had been evident for quite some time.

Nairn stated that it was hard for him to comprehend why people didn’t catch on during the show, as he had been anticipating that event all along. He maintained that the clues were evident and even remembered a specific moment when Daenerys revealed her intentions towards King’s Landing, which reinforced his opinion that her character’s transformation should not have come as a shock.

Additionally, he mentioned that at a particular growth stage, she had declared she would incinerate King’s Landing with Drogon’s flames. True to her word, she carried out this action.

Despite generally enjoying the previous season, Nairn had one significant issue: he felt it could have been extended. The compact season structure, featuring fewer episodes but extended running times, fell short of his anticipations.

In response to the widespread discussions about last season’s creative choices, Nairn chose to justify some of them. Particularly, the decision to have Cersei Lannister perish under rubble instead of meeting a more gruesome end was one that he defended. While many fans expressed their dissatisfaction with this outcome, Nairn felt it suited the character’s demise.

Despite recognizing that viewers had their unique opinions regarding the series finale, Nairn remains pleased with what Game of Thrones achieved overall. He wishes, however, that more people found satisfaction in it since he personally enjoyed it immensely.
