‘There’s a Lot of Hotel Rooms’: James Corden Shares Bizarre Writing Process for Gavin and Stacey

As a devoted fan of Gavin & Stacey, I find myself captivated by the behind-the-scenes insights into the creative process of James Corden and Ruth Jones. The duo’s unconventional approach to writing is not only refreshing but also incredibly relatable.

James Corden and Ruth Jones, the masterminds behind the sitcom Gavin & Stacey, offered a sneak peek into their unique creative method as they work on the much-awaited Christmas special, titled Gavin & Stacey: The Ending.

The pair of scriptwriters from the popular series graced the Capital FM Breakfast Show, hosted by Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby, sharing behind-the-scenes secrets about the creative process that leads to the program’s innovative ideas.

Corden and Jones shared that they frequently draw inspiration from unusual locations. One particularly striking writing session for them transpired within a hotel room situated close to London’s Heathrow Airport. As James put it, “We’ve penned many ideas inside numerous hotel rooms.

Ruth mentioned that one of the unique instances was when she visited Scotland the previous year, and they managed to work together for just a single day. She stated that she had flown from Inverness to Heathrow and spent a day writing at a hotel located near the airport’s runway with them.

Regrettably, the writing process didn’t unfold as anticipated. James acknowledged that it wasn’t their most fruitful workday, and in retrospect, he admitted it seemed like an error. However, at the moment, they were almost there, on the verge of completion.

During their usual writing sessions, Corden and Jones aim to complete between six and ten pages per day. However, on this particular occasion, they found it challenging to meet their daily target. Corden admitted that together, they managed to write only about one and a half pages.

Ruth pointed out that their approach was somewhat disorganized, as they use sticky notes, but these notes lack specific details. She admitted to occasionally discovering these notes, which typically contain just a couple of words. In essence, she suggested they weren’t very advanced when it came to organization skills.

James also pondered upon the disorganized nature of their workspace. He mentioned that should someone glance in from outside, they might observe two people napping, scattered bags of chocolate buttons, and odd sticky notes plastered on the walls. He continued: “It appears chaotic, and one wouldn’t guess, ‘Ah, they must be crafting a smash-hit series.’

Regardless of its unique style, Gavin & Stacey has consistently been a beloved show since its debut in 2007. Over three seasons, it garnered success, and following its finale in 2010, fans rejoiced when the series made a comeback for a special Christmas episode in 2019.

2021’s finale episode will see the return of our beloved characters played by James, Ruth, Matthew Horne, Joanna Page, Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman, and Rob Brydon, as they bring a close to this memorable series.
