As a devoted fan who has followed Ryan Reynolds‘ journey through his films and interviews, I cannot help but admire his courage to share such a personal and heartbreaking story about his relationship with his father. His account of growing up with a father affected by Parkinson’s and grappling with the complexities that came with it is truly moving.
Ryan Reynolds had a challenging bond with his dad, James Chester Reynolds, especially after his Parkinson’s diagnosis. In an interview with PEOPLE, the star of Deadpool and Wolverine shared that his father experienced hallucinations and delusions at the age of 22, which were difficult for him to comprehend.
He explained that it significantly strained his bond with him due to the lack of transparency about their situations. The actor reminisced about his father as someone who rarely expressed feelings or showed deeper emotions. Despite always attending Ryan’s football games and occasionally playing catch, they never had meaningful conversations together.
In simpler terms, the individual was a boxer, a police officer, and known for his tough personality. I hardly remember having in-depth talks with my dad, the actor who played Deadpool and Wolverine mentioned. Discussing Parkinson’s disease was considered a sensitive topic and not openly discussed within our family.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it as: “I had only heard the term ‘Parkinson’s’ three times, if you ask me, and one of those instances wasn’t directed at me. There was an abundance of denial, a multitude of concealment that surrounded the situation. Given my lack of understanding about the disease, I, along with others, assumed that my father was simply losing his mental faculties.”
For young Ryan, it was challenging to comprehend his father’s inability to distinguish fact from fantasy and the erosion of the solid faith and trust he had built upon his perspective. He further explained, “It was just such an unprecedented departure from the man I had grown up with and knew.”
After examining the events in retrospect and reminiscing about those days, the actor expressed regret that he hadn’t handled things differently. “At the time, I couldn’t bring myself to understand and connect with him as he needed,” he admitted.
The Free Guy actor mused, “I might have been with him at the final moments, but I wasn’t. Over time, we grew apart, and this is something I’ll carry with me for eternity.” He found solace in his bond with his own children and applied lessons from his father to their relationship. As he put it, “My father possessed unwavering integrity. He never lied. Now, I have the opportunity to heal those past wounds and be present for my kids.”
Additionally, he has made a conscious effort to become more emotionally accessible and open with his children, recognizing this as an area where his own father fell short. For the past 15 years, through his collaboration with the educational campaign More Than Parkinson’s, he has been offering essential resources to patients and caregivers.
