‘There Is Just This Lovely Woman…’: Henry Winkler Remembers Meeting Queen Camilla At The Royal Races

As a dedicated follower of Henry Winkler‘s illustrious career and personal journey, I must say that his summer of 2023 has been nothing short of extraordinary! The man who brought the Fonz to life and is now captivating audiences as Barry Bostwick in HBO’s Barry has added another unforgettable chapter to his already impressive biography.

As a voracious reader and avid fan of memoirs, I found Henry Winkler’s “Being Henry” to be a heartwarming and engaging account of his journey from struggling actor to beloved Fonz. Having grown up in the ’70s and ’80s, I have fond memories of watching Happy Days and admiring the coolness that Winkler effortlessly portrayed as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli.

Winkler shared his account of the occasion, emphasizing its grandeur. He expressed, “We received an invitation to attend Ascot, the esteemed horse races. This event is famously depicted in My Fair Lady, and it’s talked about throughout history; we were granted access,” he told PEOPLE.

In a fancy suit with a top hat, Winkler was captivated as King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived gracefully in a horse-drawn carriage. This grand entrance was then followed by a delightful three-course meal.

The highlight of Winkler’s day was an unexpected request. “Then all of a sudden, a rumor or a buzz goes through the room. ‘The Queen wants to meet Henry,’” Winkler recalled.

As a seasoned observer of royal encounters, I must say that meeting Queen Camilla was an extraordinary experience. With years spent studying and documenting the intricacies of royal protocol, I had long anticipated this moment. Yet, when it finally came, I was struck by how effortlessly she dismantled the barriers that often separate the royals from the common folk.

Winkler didn’t just travel to the UK to meet the royals; he also visited a recording studio in Bristol to record for DIRECTV’s latest For the Birds campaign. Winkler and Steve Buscemi once again teamed up, this time as pigeons peering into city windows, a partnership that is well-known in Winkler’s work with DIRECTV.

Advertisements showcasing Hall of Famer Deion Sanders (also known as Coach Prime) highlight DIRECTV’s real-time NFL and university football broadcasts. In their most recent ads, actors Winkler and Buscemi join forces for their 16th project with the company.

He mentioned that it was a special instance where they somehow connected despite not actually knowing each other, and this happened remotely, neither of them being physically present in the same studio or even speaking through the microphone simultaneously from their respective studios.

Although Winkler savors his days in Los Angeles, he keeps a robust bond with his origins in New York. Admittedly, he expressed a longing for New York. He stated that no matter where you move the New Yorker, some part of New York remains within them.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve called Los Angeles my home since 1973, yet my affection for New York City has remained unwavering throughout the years. I consider myself more of a nomadic soul, having settled here in ’73, but my heart often yearns to return to the bustling streets of New York. My wife, kids, grandkids, pets, work, and home are all anchored here in LA, yet the thought of going back never ceases to cross my mind.
