I’m so excited! The Whitest Kids U’Know, that hilarious comedy group, is finally releasing their animated movie, MARS, in theaters. I’ve been waiting for this for ages!
As a huge film fan, I’m really excited to hear that Synergetic Distribution is giving this movie a special release! It’s starting with screenings in eight cities beginning February 20th, and thankfully, it’s kicking off right here in Los Angeles at a few Alamo Drafthouse cinemas. Then, on March 13th, it’ll be rolling out nationwide, so everyone will get a chance to see it on the big screen!
The film previously premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

What ‘MARS’ Is About
The story follows Kyle, who impulsively enters a contest to travel to Mars shortly before his wedding. To his surprise, he wins, and decides to abandon his wedding plans to take the trip instead, effectively leaving Earth behind.
Things go sideways fast.
What was advertised as a luxurious trip to Mars turns out to be a fraud. The passengers are all mentally unstable, and the crew is left stranded on the planet with no hope of returning. The story follows the resulting chaos as the group realizes they’ve been tricked by a manipulative billionaire.
A Long Road To Release
The Whitest Kids U’Know started as a comedy group at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. They gained popularity in the 2000s with five seasons on IFC, becoming known for their unique and often-quoted sketches.
I recently learned the fascinating backstory of MARS. It actually started as an idea during the height of their live sketch show! The creators then turned to their incredibly supportive Twitch community to help fund it, which is pretty amazing. But here’s the kicker – it took over a decade to finally bring this project to life. Talk about dedication!
As Sam Brown explained, the film also serves as a final collaboration with the late Trevor Moore.
“After over a decade of work, we couldn’t be more excited about finally releasing ‘Whitest Kids U’ Know’s Mars,’” Brown said. “As the last project we will ever create with our beloved friend and leader, Trevor Moore, this is more than a movie to us. That being said it is still very dumb and very fun.”

Zach Cregger’s Post-WKUK Rise
Troupe member Zach Cregger has since become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directors.
He first gained attention with the scary movie Barbarian, and then achieved worldwide success with Weapons, which has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Who Directed ‘MARS’
Sevan Najarian, known for his work on shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Children’s Hospital, directed and produced the film. He’s also worked on many projects for Channel 101.
