As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been utterly captivated by Amazon’s “The Wheel of Time” since its premiere in 2021. Over the past four years, this series has graced our screens with three seasons, each consisting of eight enthralling episodes. The latest season wrapped up on April 17, 2025, leaving viewers like me reeling from a mind-bending final twist.
Drawing inspiration from the book series initially penned by Robert Jordan, later continued by Brandon Sanderson, the series has incorporated several alterations. Notably, two significant modifications unfolded in the closing episodes of Season 3.
Given the circumstances, showrunner Rafe Judkins recently opened up to the media regarding the significant plot twists in the series and offered fans a rationale behind the extensive revelations deviating from the source books.
Let me preface this by stating that the following information reveals crucial plot points from the final episode of Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time,” so proceed with caution while reading the material ahead.
In the last few episodes of this season, two characters meet untimely ends that haven’t occurred in the books yet. Loial (played by Hammed Animashaun) gave up his life during the Battle of Emond’s Field, and later, Siuan (portrayed by Sophie Okonedo) was murdered by Elaida (Shohreh Aghdashloo) in the White Tower after she had been ousted as the Flame of Tar Valon.
In the series, the narratives for these two characters were concluded, even though there was potentially more material available from the books. Upon being asked about this, Judkin stated that the writers were indeed deliberate in their decision-making process.
In his enthusiasm for his characters, Robert Jordan wrote them in a way that they all end up in The Last Battle, as if every character makes it there. While this is great for a book series, it’s not feasible when choosing actors because it means some characters may just stand around without significant roles. Therefore, our main priority is ensuring the actors we have are actively contributing to scenes and not merely standing by. We simply can’t waste the talent of our excellent actors in that manner.
Judkin elaborated on his original response by explaining that they intend to showcase the most memorable scenes from the books, allowing characters to depart instead of having them stay throughout the series. He emphasized that this decision is carefully considered and involves a lot of planning in the writers’ room. Additionally, he mentioned that there were other characters whose deaths were initially considered but were ultimately abandoned due to the stories they aim to tell for potential future seasons. This choice, he clarified, is never made without thorough contemplation.
