In simpler terms, Robert Kirkman, the creator of “The Walking Dead”, has left no doubt about his views on the character Negan through an uncensored and forthright statement directed at those who dislike this ruthless figure. This candid expression offers a glimpse into his creative mindset – a perspective that many writers may empathize with or aspire to understand.
As a devoted fan of “The Walking Dead”, I can attest to the fact that not everyone holds the same affection for Negan as I do. In fact, among fellow fans and even one cast member, there’s been quite a bit of vocal disapproval for this character. Yet, in the recent issue #103 of “The Walking Dead Deluxe”, Robert Kirkman stands firm in his defense of Negan’s role within the narrative.
This matter stands out significantly because it signifies Negan’s absolute control over the group, resulting in Rick Grimes being ousted from his leadership position, causing a major shift in the dynamics among the team members.
Negan swiftly won over Kirkman, as he discovered the character’s forceful demeanor facilitated the writing task seamlessly. In fact, Kirkman confessed that composing scenes featuring Negan was a breeze, frequently producing more words than expected.
Kirkman shared that crafting dialogues for Negan often gave the impression of shorter issues due to the amount of space they occupied. Regardless of the debate surrounding Negan, Kirkman remains proud of his character creation.
He also playfully acknowledges an apology to Steven Yeun, who portrayed Glenn Rhee in the television show. The gruesome death of Glenn at Negan’s hands, wielding the notorious barbed-wire bat Lucille, is one of those moments that fans remember vividly and find deeply emotional. It comes as no shock that Yeun might not feel the same affection for the character as Kirkman does.
In the premium version, Kirkman doesn’t merely describe this crucial incident; he also responds to readers’ intriguing queries and offers his own perspectives. He particularly tackles the criticism aimed at Negan, stating firmly to those who dislike him: “I understand some people despise Negan. Those individuals can go take a long walk.” (Apologies for the colorful language, attributed to Steven.)
