For as long as people have been making movies and TV shows, dogs have been popular pets and frequent stars. They often play memorable roles, sometimes even becoming as iconic as the human actors. Recently, The Times newspaper in Britain created a list of the 25 best dogs in film and television history to celebrate their contributions.
Topping the list is Scooby-Doo, the lovable Great Dane cartoon character who’s been entertaining families for over 50 years. Along with his friends in the Mystery Machine, Scooby has solved countless spooky mysteries, and his adventures continue to delight audiences.
Right behind him is Lassie, the rough collie who first became famous in books and then starred in movies alongside Elizabeth Taylor. From her first appearance in 1943 to her long-running TV show, Lassie became the world’s most famous dog on screen, and she’s still considered one of the best.
Coming in at number three is Toto, Dorothy’s loyal cairn terrier companion from the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. Surprisingly, Terry, the dog who played Toto, was paid $125 a week – more than many of the human actors!
Completing the top five are Shep, the popular border collie from the British show Blue Peter, famous for his command “Get down, Shep!”, and Muttley, the playful troublemaker from Wacky Races, instantly recognizable for his unique, scratchy laugh.
The list highlights the many talents of dogs in entertainment, from the adventurous German Shepherd in The Littlest Hobo to the famously messy St. Bernard, Beethoven, who starred in a series of eight popular family comedies.
Fans of animation will be happy to see Gromit, the clever and quiet beagle from Aardman Animations, and Brian Griffin, the witty, cocktail-loving Labrador from Family Guy, both recognized. Completing the top ten is K9, the robotic dog companion from Doctor Who, a character fans still hope will return.
Through various techniques – from stop-motion animation to CGI and traditional training – these memorable dogs have had a huge impact on pop culture worldwide, proving that dogs truly are a cinema’s best friend.
