The ‘Thunderbolts*’ Asterisk Theory Might Explain the Meaning of the Symbol

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Universe, I am beyond excited about the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. The mystery surrounding the asterisk in its title is intriguing, and the fact that David Harbour hinted at something interesting without giving too much away only makes it more tantalizing.

Due to the success of Deadpool and Wolverine in cinemas, coupled with the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Victor Von Doom, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) future looks promising once more, following a string of less impressive films.

Prior to the arrival of the next two highly-anticipated Avengers films, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as the main villain, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will unveil a selection of other projects. One such project generating significant excitement is the forthcoming Thunderbolts* film, slated for release on May 2, 2025.

The film, shrouded in enigma, recently unveiled a fresh trailer, shedding light on certain aspects of its plot while raising even more puzzles. A key mystery surrounding this production is the asterisk embedded within its title, and we’ve concocted several hypotheses regarding its potential meaning.

Recently, actor David Harbour, who portrays the Red Guardian in the film, disclosed some intriguing details about the asterisk.

Following that, I’m excited to dive back into my role for The Thunderbolts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By the way, have you noticed the asterisk in its title? I’ve been wondering if perhaps it hints at a secret or special connection within the team.

David Harbour: Yes. (Laughs)

When did you find out why there was an asterisk in the title?

David Harbour: Essentially, they added an asterisk later on. The asterisk was a concept someone thought up…I’m trying to find words that won’t land me in hot water…Let me put it this way: The asterisk is quite intriguing. I get why people might want to include one there (laughs). I’m eager for the audience to discover it too. However, once more, I can’t reveal any more details.

Currently, Harbour hasn’t disclosed many details, but it’s clear that there’s a mystery surrounding his statement. Fans have been debating about the possible meaning behind the asterisk, yet no one has conclusively figured out what it represents. Nevertheless, as we mentioned earlier, various theories have emerged regarding its significance.

In our opinion, the asterisk might indicate that the Thunderbolts may not actually be the Thunderbolts as we know them, but rather a different team being presented under that name. The asterisk could serve as a cautionary note, suggesting that the representation of these characters should not be accepted at face value.

It’s possible that these individuals belong to either the Secret or Dark Avengers teams, but given Marvel’s current efforts to distinguish them from the main Avengers, especially considering their unusual situation at present, they might have opted for the Thunderbolts moniker instead. Let’s wait and see.
