For over 40 years, Nintendo has consistently created amazing Super Mario Bros. games. Now, we’re seeing if they can achieve the same success with animated movies. The latest trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie suggests they will, and it looks like a truly grand sequel to their hit film. The story is massive in scope, with Bowser’s quest for revenge taking place across numerous planets.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, earning over $1.3 billion worldwide. Now, Nintendo and Illumination are making a sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with an even bigger story! This time, the villainous Bowser and his family are seeking revenge, and the film is inspired by a fan-favorite video game. The trailer is packed with familiar faces – Koopas, Toads, Princess Peach, and of course, Mario and Luigi – promising a fun adventure for fans of the games.
The biggest news, though, is that Donald Glover is voicing Yoshi. LOL perfect.
The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the return of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black. Joining them will be Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
To recreate the success of the first film, Nintendo and Illumination brought back the original creative team. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned as directors, with Matthew Fogel writing the script again. Brian Tyler also composed the music, just as he did for the first movie.
Does the new movie measure up to the original? Given it’s a Nintendo production, we were already expecting great things. We’ll know for sure when it’s released on April 1, 2026.
