The Story Behind How Keanu Reeves Named John Wick

Originally created by Derek Kolstad, the John Wick movies have become a major influence on modern action films, combining a dark, stylish look with impressive practical stunts. The series stars Keanu Reeves as a skilled assassin who comes out of retirement after a personal loss – the death of his dog. This surprisingly emotional story, along with a detailed and unique world of secret organizations, has made John Wick a global phenomenon that’s become a part of popular culture.

After the huge success of John Wick: Chapter 4, fans were curious about the filmmakers’ vision for what seemed like a final chapter. Keanu Reeves recently explained to EW that the fourth movie was always meant to be the end of John Wick’s story.

From the start, Reeves and director Chad Stahelski wanted a compelling reason to continue the series. They eventually decided the story should focus on John Wick’s path toward death. Reeves shared that they constantly asked themselves, “Why make another movie?” They concluded that exploring John’s mortality would be the most natural and genuine approach.

This idea shaped the entire fourth film, influencing every creative decision as they crafted the details of how John Wick would meet his end. Interestingly, the series almost had a different name.

The project was originally called Scorn, but Reeves unintentionally rebranded it. He kept referring to the film as John Wick during early interviews and press events, and the marketing team realized the accidental promotion was incredibly effective, so the name stuck.

Looking back, it’s fascinating to hear from creator Derek Kolstad that the title change to John Wick wasn’t initially planned. He actually confessed it was a happy accident! Keanu Reeves kept accidentally referring to the project as ‘John Wick’ during interviews, and that generated, get this, four to five million dollars worth of free publicity. Suddenly, sticking with that title wasn’t just a creative choice, it was a financial necessity. Now, honestly, I can’t imagine the film being called anything but John Wick. The name and the character are just completely inseparable; it’s become his identity.

I’m so excited to see what Keanu Reeves is doing! It feels like he’s really hit a new stride in his career, while still giving a nod to the worlds he’s already created. I was thrilled to hear about his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot – and that it was with Alex Winter, his Bill & Ted buddy! Everyone said their comedic timing and the play’s deeper meaning were fantastic.

And of course, he’s not leaving the John Wick universe behind! He’s going to be in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina this March, which is a spin-off set between John Wick 3 and 4. Plus, he’s also starring in a new black comedy called The Entertainment System Is Down with Kirsten Dunst and a bunch of other great actors.

It’s amazing to me how Keanu can move so effortlessly between serious stage roles, like Shakespeare, and being one of the biggest action stars around. He’s truly a unique talent who can do it all!
