The Stars of LEGO STAR WARS: REBUILD THE GALAXY Dive Into Their Love Letter to STAR WARS

As a hardcore fan of both LEGO and Star Wars, it’s safe to say that if I were Dustin from Stranger Things, I’d be absolutely smitten with LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy! However, being the secretive one he is, he might feign disinterest initially, setting up a dozen secret YouTube accounts to leave snarky comments about the trailers. But let’s face it, once his kids catch him, there will be no escaping the charm of this series!

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the latest addition to the captivating LEGO Star Wars universe is here – “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.” This miniseries revolves around three extraordinary characters, Sig and Dev Greebling, and their amazing friend Yesi Scala, who I am fortunate enough to call my companions in this galactic journey.

Was everyone already a fan of Star Wars prior to joining the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy project? And what did you enjoy most about immersing yourself in the galaxy, light-years away?

As a long-time admirer, it was truly an immense privilege for me to be part of this fantastic production. Ever since my childhood days, I’ve been enamored with it, so this opportunity has been nothing short of exhilarating. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm as I eagerly await the reactions from viewers. And let me tell you, my favorite aspect of the series up to now might just be Darth Jar Jar – his humor is simply contagious! Plus, the concept resonates deeply with me because it’s something I’d have done myself.

Marsai Martin: I’ve been a fan of Star Wars for such a short period. I don’t know much about it, but the opportunity to join the franchise and discuss it with Dan [Hernandez] and Benji [Samit], our talented writers, was truly remarkable. They shared their enthusiasm and dedication for this project with me, which made me wholeheartedly agree to be a part of it.

Not only am I familiar with LEGO, but both my sister and I possess a vast collection. It’s a dream for these two realms to intersect, and I’m always eager to delve deeper into the subject. Moreover, the Star Wars universe is rich with knowledge, intricate details, and it consistently ignites my enthusiasm. I can’t wait to explore further!

Gaten Matarazzo: Ever since I was seven, Star Wars has been a huge passion of mine, fueling my love for films and the art of movie making. My fascination with sci-fi and everything Star Wars-related is what drives me, and it’s a significant reason why I’m where I am today. So, I owe a great deal of gratitude to this franchise. To have the opportunity to contribute to something as exciting and innovative within the Star Wars universe is truly an honor, especially when working alongside such a fantastic team. Furthermore, being part of a project that’s light-hearted, enjoyable, and created by fans for fans has surpassed any dreams I may have had. It’s a dream come true, a fantastic endeavor.

What’s your process for collaborating with Gaten Matarazzo and Tony Revolori to develop the heartwarming brotherly dynamic between Sig and Dev Greebling in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy? This on-screen relationship is one of the most touching sibling portrayals I’ve witnessed.

Revolori: What I’m trying to express is that we shared so many experiences together: from watching movies, long FaceTime chats that went on until 3 a.m., and casual conversations like “Hey, bro.” Unfortunately, this is the first time I’ve had a proper chance to spend time with Gaten. As a result, we didn’t collaborate directly on this project. However, since we both have siblings and brothers, it wasn’t too much of a stretch for us to imagine each other as our own brothers, which made our performances feel genuine. I also want to acknowledge the editors for selecting the right scenes that left everyone emotional.

Wow, isn’t she stunning! And as for Marsai, I adore Yesi immensely. She possesses an effortless charm, bravery, and ambition that is truly captivating. In the aftermath of the Galaxy’s reconstruction, it seems she will have to bear a significant burden. Which aspects of Yesi resonate with you the most, and what are your thoughts on the two portrayals of her character that have been presented?

Martin: Wow! What I love most about Yesi is her boundless energy and eagerness to tackle anything thrown at her, regardless of the difficulty. She’s always ready for a fight, always prepared to do whatever it takes, and I’m right there with her. Yesi would make an incredible best friend – we’d be inseparable! I trust her implicitly. Additionally, I believe that she is deeply empathetic and open-minded, displaying a wide range of emotions. This allows her to discover who she is and who she aspires to become.

In essence, this character aligns perfectly with the franchise’s narrative of galaxy reconstruction, and her loyalty is reminiscent of a close friend. She’s the ideal character for me, and I am deeply appreciative. Here’s hoping we get to witness her future journey in the story.

Yes, we all hope for more from LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy!

In a hypothetical scenario where Sig Greebling wasn’t present in the temple at the time of the Galaxy’s transformation, I wonder what path his life might have taken in a different galaxy.

Gaten Matarazzo: I’ve always found exploring contrasts to be quite enjoyable. So, here’s an idea that might stray from Dev’s usual character, but it could work: he’d be like a daring motorcycle-riding bounty hunter, akin to Evel Knievel, with a stylish speeder and a western gunslinger vibe. It could be quite thrilling. Or alternatively, he might serve as the right-hand man to an Imperial officer, handling the gritty tasks, you know, the kind of guy who does the dirty work. However, in this role, he’d adopt a more slithery, manipulative tone, acting like a sinister sidekick or henchman.

A little Hux, maybe?

Matarazzo: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. I love that. That would be really fun.

Tony and Gaten, given your past experiences with various intricate franchises, what are your thoughts on how Dustin from Stranger Things and Spider-Man’s Flash Thompson might react to the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy game?

Matarazzo: I believe Dustin is quite critical when it comes to the content he consumes and is an avid fan of Star Wars. However, I find it difficult to accept that Dustin doesn’t maintain secret YouTube accounts where he consistently leaves negative comments on trailers. But let’s imagine a scenario where he’s 40 years old, and his kids stumble upon this. His children might ask him, “Dad, why do you need nine YouTube accounts all dedicated to criticizing these trailers? I think that’s the impression I get from him.

I believe Flash harbors a hidden affection for this. He might discreetly bear a tattoo of the brothers, and if inquired about it, he’d act as though it’s nothing more than a children’s show artifact, denying any connection. However, his secret admiration for it would run deep.

Marsai, is there a character from this series that you feel I either adore or despise deeply among those you’ve portrayed?

Martin: The first thought that crossed my mind when you posed the question was, “Diane from Black-ish wouldn’t appreciate this.” This is simply because she isn’t fond of people or things. However, despite my initial instinct, Marsai seems to adore it, and we don’t prioritize Diane’s opinions. So, while I’d rather not answer the question due to Diane’s dislike, it doesn’t really matter because Marsai enjoys it immensely.

And we at TopMob love it, too! And hope to see more from the series sometime soon.

All four parts of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy are streaming now on Disney+.
