David Chase, known for creating the hit show The Sopranos, is back with a new limited series for HBO called Project: MKUltra. The series delves into a disturbing period in CIA history and marks Chase’s first big project since his popular mob drama.
The series will be adapted from John Lisle’s book, Project Mind Control, which details the story of Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the controversial MKUltra program.
Chase has acquired the rights to the book and will personally write the screenplay. This project is the first under Riverain Pictures’ agreement with HBO. Nicole Lambert, Riverain’s Head of Production and Development, will also serve as an executive producer on the series, alongside Chase.
The upcoming project, Project: MKUltra, will center on Sidney Gottlieb, a CIA chemist and spy known as “The Black Sorcerer.” He was in charge of the MKUltra program, a clandestine CIA initiative from the 1950s and 60s that involved controversial experiments attempting to control the human mind through drugs, hypnosis, and other harsh techniques.
A lot of these experiments happened without people’s permission, and some participants were seriously hurt as a result. Gottlieb is also known for unintentionally contributing to the widespread use of LSD in the United States.
The upcoming series will be a tense thriller, exploring both the covert operations of the CIA during the Cold War and the life of one of its key figures, Gottlieb. The controversial MKUltra program, intended to combat perceived brainwashing techniques used by the Soviets and Chinese, was known for its harsh and morally questionable methods.
David Chase is a well-known and award-winning television creator, having earned seven Emmy Awards – five for his groundbreaking series, The Sopranos, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. Now, he’s back at HBO with Project: MKUltra, a new show that many are excited about. It’s based on a true story full of risk, hidden truths, and difficult ethical questions, and viewers are eager to see his take on it.
