‘The Sims’ Movie Will Channel ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Lego Movie,’ Says Producer

A live-action movie inspired by the video game *The Sims* is officially being made, and the producers say it will be a fresh and entertaining adaptation.

LuckyChap Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment are producing the film, with Kate Herron directing and writing the script with Briony Redman. EA announced in September 2024 that Amazon MGM Studios is partnering on the production.

It took many years to bring this movie to life. Back in 2007, 20th Century Fox initially purchased the rights to The Sims and started developing a film with a script by Brian Lynch and production by John Davis. Unfortunately, the project stalled, and when Disney bought 21st Century Fox in 2019, those original plans were scrapped.

While promoting his new film, *The Long Walk*, producer Roy Lee discussed the upcoming *Sims* movie with The Direct. He explained that, like the surprise hit *The LEGO Movie*, the adaptation will be something truly original and different, but he couldn’t share many details just yet.

Lee also pointed out that Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, is involved, drawing a parallel to her successful film *Barbie*. He explained that the *Sims* movie will aim for a similar tone and style, falling somewhere between *The Lego Movie* and *Barbie*. He also noted that, just as with *Barbie*, audiences might be curious to see how a movie based on *The Sims* would come together, given his collaboration with Robbie.

Kate Gorman, who leads the The Sims team at EA, said they’re aiming for the new movie to be a major success. She pointed to the 2023 Barbie movie as a model, explaining they want the film to have a similarly large cultural impact.

The movie adaptation of *The Sims* is coming out at a good time, as video game movies are becoming increasingly popular. *Minecraft* has already been a huge hit in 2025, featuring familiar characters from the game. While *Barbie* and *The Lego Movie* are well-known franchises, the producers of *The Sims* believe their film will succeed by offering humor, imagination, and plenty of things fans will love.
