In the film “Captain America: Brave New World,” contrary to initial impressions given by promotional materials, the Red Hulk was not the main antagonist. Instead, it was Samuel Sterns, a character from the MCU who had been largely overlooked until now, played by Tim Blake Nelson. After being exposed to gamma radiation, Sterns transformed into the classic Hulk adversary known as the Leader (although they may not use that name in the movie).
The actor resumed his character’s part following nearly two decades. If Marvel Studios had kept Stern’s comeback secret, perhaps more of Brave New World‘s intense impact would have endured. However, they unveiled a significant twist prematurely, which may have negatively affected the movie.
Marvel Teased the Return of Tim Blake Nelson in The Incredible Hulk, Later Abandoning That Plot Thread
In the movie ‘The Incredible Hulk’ by Marvel Studios, a character named Samuel Sterns was introduced as a seemingly benevolent scientist with hidden self-serving intentions. During the film, Bruce Banner’s blood infects Sterns’ brain, hinting at his future transformation into the Leader in a possible sequel. However, that sequel never materialized, and the storyline remained dormant in Marvel’s universe of unrealized narratives and post-credit scenes. After such a long period, even die-hard MCU fans didn’t anticipate that the Samuel Sterns hints would ever come to fruition. It’s safe to say most viewers would have been taken aback, provided they recalled the character in the first place.
Marvel Studios Spoiled the Return of Tim Blake Nelson at D23 in 2022
Marvel Studios made the unexpected move of officially announcing the return of Tim Blake Nelson as part of the main cast for “Captain America: Brave New World” at the D23 Expo in 2022, which essentially spoiled the fact that his character, Sterns, would be the main antagonist. Given that Sterns was set to be a mastermind villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this revelation was difficult to avoid. If the movie had been structured differently, perhaps building up Sterns as a significant reveal within the narrative, then it wouldn’t have been such an issue. However, the film focuses on Sam investigating a mystery that many fans were already familiar with for much of its runtime. While the specifics of ‘how’ and ‘why’ are not immediately revealed, these details take a back seat to ‘who.’ By the time Captain America learns about his villain, the audience already knows who it is.
It’s Hard to Keep Marvel Casting Under Wraps, But Deadpool & Wolverine Proved That It Can Be Done
In essence, granting Marvel Studios credit for the challenge of maintaining secrecy regarding characters and cast, given the massive fanbases and potential leaks from movie sets. It’s challenging but not impossible, as evidenced by the successful keeping of major cameos secret in films like Deadpool & Wolverine. A surprise twist similar to the Sterns one might have left fans in awe, but unfortunately, Marvel missed an opportunity to impress with their strategic storytelling in Brave New World.
