Cillian Murphy, known for his role as Tommy Shelby in the hit show Peaky Blinders, revealed the surprisingly large number of cigarettes he smoked while filming the series.
Despite not being a smoker himself, actor Murphy used approximately 3,000 herbal cigarettes each season to accurately portray his character. Over the show’s six seasons, that totals around 18,000 cigarettes.
Cillian Murphy recently told The Guardian that he’s done with playing characters who smoke. He’s used a lot of prop cigarettes for roles like Peaky Blinder, and he’s decided his next character won’t be a smoker, noting that even herbal cigarettes come with health warnings and aren’t good for you.
He playfully compared his frequent use of herbal cigarettes to getting his “five a day” – a reference to the recommended daily fruit and vegetable intake – and noted how often he was photographed with one while filming.
The filmmakers used herbal cigarettes instead of tobacco to protect the actors’ health. But, as Murphy discovered, even herbal cigarettes aren’t entirely safe, and research indicates they may still lead to health problems down the line.
Cillian Murphy’s commitment to the role of Tommy Shelby was physically challenging, especially considering the character’s constant smoking. He’s now looking forward to acting in parts where he doesn’t have to smoke.
Portraying Tommy Shelby wasn’t just about acting; Cillian Murphy meticulously focused on details, like the character’s constant smoking. His recent comments offer fans a glimpse into the dedication actors make to create believable performances.
