As a lifelong horror fan, I thought I’d seen it all – every gruesome kill, every jump scare. But let me tell you, IT: Welcome to Derry genuinely surprised me. This series doesn’t hold back, and I found myself audibly reacting – gasping and saying “what?!” – multiple times in just the first episode. That’s how effective it is! I’m here to break down the most brutal and terrifying moments I’ve seen so far in IT: Welcome to Derry. It’s a truly shocking and effective horror experience.
The Scariest and Most Shocking Moments in IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 1, “The Pilot”
Matty’s Car Ride From Hell
It’s tough for young Matty. Abandoned and possibly abused at home, he has a terrifying experience one night. After leaving the local theater without paying, he tries to hitch a ride to escape the town of Derry. A friendly-looking family offers him a lift, but things quickly become disturbing. From the young boy spelling creepy words to the girl handling raw meat and the father refusing to let Matty leave, the situation escalates into pure horror when the mother gives birth to a monstrous, winged baby that attacks.
Matty Reaches Out Through the Pipes
Lilly Bainbridge is already struggling with immense guilt and trauma, believing she’s responsible for her father’s work accident and subsequent death. This led to a breakdown and time spent in a mental institution, Juniper Hill Asylum. Now, back at school, she faces relentless bullying, but that’s only the beginning of her troubles after a strange event in her bathroom.
She thinks she hears Matty singing a song from the movie The Music Man – the last film they watched together before he went missing. She pleads with the voice to come home, but it replies, with a chilling tone, that “he won’t let me.” Then, bloody fingers suddenly emerge from the sink. This terrifying scene marks the start of Pennywise’s manipulation of her in Welcome to Derry, and it’s one of the most frightening moments in the first episode.
Teddy’s Faceskin Lampshade
Next, it’s Teddy’s turn to be terrified by Pennywise. While eating dinner with his family, he nervously asks his father if someone could kidnap a child and hide them in the sewer for months. His father brushes off the question, telling him to stop reading so many comics and indulging in fantasy. To emphasize his point, Teddy’s father recounts the historical suffering of Jewish people, describing horrific acts like faces being cut off and used as lampshades.
Given that the Holocaust had ended only about 20 years earlier, it’s no surprise a young boy like Teddy would be terrified. He actually had a nightmare where the faces of people were talking from his lampshade – a genuinely creepy image. However, it wasn’t even the scariest part of this particular episode.
The Capitol Theater Massacre

The most frightening scene in the first episode of Welcome to Derry is definitely what happens at the theater. A group – Lilly, Phil (who believes in conspiracies), Teddy, and Phil’s talkative sister Suzy – are investigating the disappearance of Matty. They find out he was last seen at the Capitol Theater by Ronnie Grogan, a classmate whose father owns the building. They convince Ronnie to help them, and together they go to the theater hoping to find some answers.
The group starts watching The Music Man hoping to find hints, but things take a dark turn when a baby appears on screen with Matty. Turns out, it’s the demon baby, and it brutally kills Phil, Teddy, and young Suzy. This is a shocking twist, especially since many shows, like Stranger Things, usually keep their core group of kids safe – and sometimes even add new characters. Killing off children is still a risky move for a show, but Welcome to Derry ends its first episode by having three children murdered in a theater.
