At the Tudum event, Netflix made the formal unveiling of when its upcoming crime thriller “The RIP” will debut. Starring long-term partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, this movie is scheduled for a global release on January 16, 2026. The creative mind behind it, Joe Carnahan, has also penned the script. Notable actors such as Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Steven Yeun, and Kyle Chandler are set to play significant roles in the film.
At the recent event, a preview for Netflix’s upcoming movie titled “The RIP” was exclusively unveiled to the audience present. Notably, this production house is Artists Equity, the studio established by the dynamic duo, Damon and Affleck, in 2022.
What is The RIP About?
In simpler terms, the TV series “RIP” focuses on a team of Miami police officers whose relationships start to unravel when they stumble upon large sums of money secreted away in a dilapidated hideout. As news of the huge cash find circulates, the team members become uncertain about their allegiance to one another and who among them can be relied upon.
Joe Carnahan mentioned that the movie’s plot draws inspiration from a deeply personal event in the life of his friend, who served as a tactical narcotics officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department. He explained, “The Rip emerged from a profoundly personal experience that my friend lived through, not just as a father but also as head of tactical narcotics. It’s partially based on his life and on my affection for the ’70s cop thrillers like Serpico and Heat.
In addition to Damon and Affleck, the cast includes:
- Steven Yeun (Beef, The Walking Dead)
- Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One)
- Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace)
- Sasha Calle (The Flash)
- Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun)
- Lina Esco (S.W.A.T.)
- Scott Adkins (John Wick 4)
- Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
The title “The Rip” originates from the language used by Miami police officers. Essentially, this term refers to the act of taking possessions from a criminal, which is commonly called “ripping.” When referring to a seizure of money, drugs, or weapons, the action itself is often referred to as “the rip.” (Carnahan explained.)
The RIP is the most recent venture from Artist Equity, a creative studio led by artists Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, established in November 2022. Their inaugural production, Air, hit theaters in the spring of 2023 to positive reception and respectable ticket sales.
After that, they’ve been involved with several projects, including “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” on Amazon, “Small Things Like These,” which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, and “The Instigators” on Apple.
