According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sauron is in the process of crafting his iconic ring.

A significant feature of the forthcoming episodes lies in the Elves’ War against Sauron, a pivotal conflict. In the chronology of “The Lord of the Rings,” this event unfolds during J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age and signifies the initial major battle preceding “The Lord of the Rings.

In the third season, we find ourselves many years after the events of the second, with the story unfolding during the intense conflict between Elves and Sauron. The Dark Lord is on a quest to create the One Ring, which he believes will provide him the decisive advantage needed to finally conquer all of Middle-earth.

Simultaneously, it’s been shared that Charlotte Brändström, an international Emmy Award nominee, has been chosen as the director for the upcoming third season.
