As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth, I must confess that my heart is heavy with the news of ‘The Rings of Power’. The second season has certainly shown promise, but the blatant disregard for the source material is a bitter pill to swallow.
In the second season of ‘The Rings of Power’, recently released, the foundation for the upcoming storylines has been skillfully set. The tale unfolds as Sauron subtly influences Celebrimbor, the decline of the Dwarves becomes increasingly apparent, and we delve deeper into the Orcs in Middle-Earth, a departure from traditional lore. Simultaneously, Galadriel is undergoing a transformation from a headstrong warrior to a more reflective persona.
Initially, the series received positive reviews from critics and improvements were apparent compared to its first season. However, a concerning pattern persisted since the beginning – an overt lack of respect for the original source.
It appears that viewership for ‘The Rings of Power’ is significantly decreasing from one season to the next, with only about half as many households tuning in for Season 2 compared to Season 1 during their respective premiere weeks. As we previously reported, the initial numbers suggest potential challenges for the show’s future on Prime Video. According to Deadline and Samba TV data, approximately 1.8 million U.S. households watched the first episode of Season 1 within three days of its release, whereas only 902,000 U.S. households tuned in for the premiere of Season 2 within four days of its debut.
If ‘The Rings of Power’ had a smaller budget for its production, it wouldn’t be such an issue. The first season alone cost a staggering $465 million, making it the most expensive TV series ever made. This figure does not account for the $250 million Amazon paid to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. Although the specific costs of the second season haven’t been disclosed yet, considering that production costs typically remain consistent between seasons, we can assume that the budget is roughly the same. Amazon secured the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ from the Tolkien Estate in November 2017, committing to a five-season production valued at a minimum of $1 billion, so you have an idea of its scale.
It appears that reduced audience numbers for “The Rings of Power” may be due to less extensive marketing compared to Season 1, given the massive promotional push earlier. However, online fan responses suggest a different narrative. In other words, “The Rings of Power” seems destined to follow in the footsteps of “The Acolyte,” which suffered from low viewership, negative reception, and an expensive budget, eventually leading to its termination.
Revising ‘The Rings of Power’ could be challenging due to the initial intention for five seasons, but they’re considering a reboot instead, focusing on creators who are enthusiasts of the original source material. This approach aims to avoid incorporating themes that starkly contradict J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision.
