Cruise played the captivating vampire Lestat, who transforms Pitt’s character, Louis, into a vampire. Directed by Neil Jordan and also starring a young Kirsten Dunst and Christian Slater, the movie was a hit with audiences and earned two Academy Award nominations. However, the production quietly sparked a decades-long rivalry between Cruise and Pitt.

Recently, Pitt described his time filming as deeply unpleasant. He remembered spending six months working in the dark during a dreary London winter at Pinewood Studios, and admitted the difficult conditions almost made him leave the project.

Working with Tom Cruise was challenging for Brad Pitt, both because of the intense environment and their differing professional approaches. Pitt also believed the movie strayed from the core of the original story. The book focused on Louis’s internal journey of self-discovery, but Pitt felt the film prioritized the more dramatic and flamboyant aspects of Lestat’s character, leaving him with little to contribute and forcing him to watch Cruise dominate the performance.

The difference in how Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise approached their work created tension between them. Pitt famously described their personalities as being fundamentally different, comparing Cruise to the North Pole and himself to the South. He believed there was always an unspoken rivalry, making it difficult to connect or have real conversations on set. While the tension bothered him somewhat, Pitt acknowledged that it wasn’t malicious and praised Cruise as a talented actor who often receives unfair criticism due to his success.

Interestingly, Cruise isn’t the only actor Pitt has been selective about working with. Aaron Taylor-Johnson once shared that Pitt keeps a list of actors he won’t work with, prioritizing a positive and enjoyable atmosphere on set as he’s gotten older.

He’s currently filming the dramatic film The Riders in Greece, where photos surfaced of him looking bruised and injured while shooting a particularly emotional scene. The film, directed by Edward Berger, tells the story of a father’s urgent search for his family across Europe and is predicted to be a strong awards contender next year. Pitt also just finished filming The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that will be released on Netflix, directed by David Fincher.
