In response to public disapproval following Nintendo’s decision to sell their first-party games at $80 on the Nintendo Switch 2, Microsoft has quietly increased the prices of its consoles and controllers, and is likely to raise game prices as well in the latter part of this year.
Microsoft recently announced new prices for their Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. As of now, the Xbox Series X is priced at $599.99, which is $100 more than its original price. Similarly, the Xbox Series S has been raised to $379.99, a $80 increase from its previous cost. This adjustment follows Sony’s decision to raise the prices of the PS5 in certain regions as a result of recent tariffs imposed by the U.S government on specific areas.
The costs of other Microsoft hardware are on the rise as well: Currently, an Xbox base controller retails at $64.99, while a wireless headset comes in at a hefty $119.99. To add to this, it’s expected that the prices of first-party Xbox games will go up later this year, possibly in time for the holiday season. This adjustment could potentially bring them in line with Nintendo Switch 2’s game prices, which are set at $79.99. However, we don’t have details on which specific games will be affected by this change yet.
Although none of them have reached the projected retail price of $700 for the hypothetical PS5 Pro, it seems we might see prices trending upward, given that both Microsoft and Sony may be working on the upcoming console generations within a few years’ time.
