‘The Penguin’s’ Sofia Falcone, Cristin Milioti, Discusses Her Obssession with Catwoman and Her Approach to the Role

As a dedicated fan of The Penguin and all things Batman-related, I can confidently say that Cristin Milioti‘s portrayal of Sofia Falcone is not only captivating but also a testament to her lifelong love for comic book characters. Her obsession with Catwoman, evident from dressing up as the character as a child and admiring Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance in Batman Returns, seems to have played a significant role in shaping her interpretation of Sofia.

If you’ve been tuning into HBO’s The Penguin, it’s likely you’re already aware that while Colin Farrell delivers a remarkable portrayal as The Penguin, Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone stands out as the series’ absolute highlight. Milioti’s performance as Sofia has earned her high praise and she is undeniably one of the show’s most captivating characters.

Fans are raving about Sofia’s gritty portrayal of the character, which seems perfectly suited for a major mafia series like “The Sopranos” or “Boardwalk Empire.” Given this, it’s no wonder that there’s a lot of buzz surrounding her character, and we’ve come across an intriguing interview about Milioti that we wanted to share.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Cristin Milioti shared insights about her character in “The Penguin”, along with her past fascination with Catwoman. Additionally, showrunner Lauren LeFranc offered compliments for Milioti’s acting skills and methodology.

Regardless of your opinions about her, it’s worth noting that Cristin Milioti is a devoted fan of comic books. Her acting history might lead one to doubt this, but the actress herself has confessed that she had auditioned for multiple comic book projects prior to The Penguin, only to be turned down on each occasion.

As I tried out various roles, unfortunately, none seemed keen on me. Yet, I never clung possessively to the opportunities. Perhaps this is one of the joys of growing older – realizing I didn’t land those early chances. Instead, I got my shot, and it felt just right for me. I know now that I wasn’t a fit for those other roles.

Back then, in ’92, I first fell head over heels for the world of comics. It was none other than Michelle Pfeiffer’s captivating performance in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns that sparked this passion within me.

I strongly believe that the concept of performance is deeply ingrained within me, much like how significant childhood performances stay with you forever. For instance, I was 7 when Batman Returns was released and I watched it in theaters. It scared me, yet I felt an intense desire to absorb it completely.

She additionally shared that once upon a Halloweens past, she donned the guise of Catwoman. This detail only serves to underscore her deep-seated fascination with the character.

“I recall the costume had tiny plastic nails that easily popped on, quite fragile. Every day, I’d eagerly wait at the end of my driveway, rocking back and forth, wondering if it was finally the day. I did wear it for Halloween, but after that, I just couldn’t stop wearing it. When I returned home from school, I’d put it on straight away and get very excited.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that this character, Sofia Falcone, holds significant importance for Milioti as she is deeply connected to this role.

Ever since I first stepped into this role, I’ve been utterly captivated. They even let me sneak a peek at the initial four episodes before we began shooting. When I delved into Episode 4, it was like an emotional bomb went off. Seeing my character transform from her former self to a ruthless villain within just one hour left me absolutely spellbound. It’s as if I was watching a feature-length film. You get to witness all the various stages of her descent into madness.

Moreover, if you believe that Milioti’s statements are mere speculation, it’s worth noting that these details were also corroborated by showrunner Lauren LeFranc. In fact, she highly commended Milioti and her unique working style.

“She’s so charming, so it makes sense that she gets a lot of romantic-comedy-esque roles or a quirky version of them, but she’s such a tremendous dramatic actress, too. I really think she transformed Sofia in my head. I never pictured anyone when I was writing her, and then once Cristin came in and had her first scenes, I was like, ‘Oh, this is completely correct.’ Sofia starts as a character who is a little bit of a cipher. You don’t understand what happened to her. You don’t understand what her agenda fully is. You just know that she throws Oz off, and there’s power in throwing a guy like Oz off because he’s not easily thrown.”
