‘The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin’ Trailer Debuts with Epic Action and Stunning Visuals

As a big fantasy fan, I’m really excited to hear that The Daily Wire is launching a scripted series called The Pendragon Cycle! It’s coming to their DailyWire+ platform on January 22nd, and I’m definitely planning to check it out.

This series, adapted from the bestselling books by Stephen R. Lawhead, is the company’s most ambitious TV project yet. It marks a shift for them, moving beyond documentaries and films into epic fantasy narratives.

The official trailer for The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin is now available! I especially enjoyed seeing more of Tom Sharp in the role of Merlin. Tom wasn’t a well-known actor when he started, but he’s truly carried this show with his performance. I…

The project was initially revealed in November 2022, following The Daily Wire’s acquisition of the rights to adapt Lawhead’s books for film and television. In July 2023, Jeremy Boreing, co-founder and co-CEO, announced he would step back from his usual duties to co-direct the seven-episode series. Filming began in Europe – mainly in Italy and Hungary – in September 2023.

Tom Sharp plays the role of Merlin in the series, alongside Brett Cooper as Ganieda, Rose Reid as Charis, and James Arden as Taliesin. The cast also includes Finney Cassidy, Myles Clohessy, Alex Laurence Phillips, Daniel Fathers, and Emree Franklin.

The Pendragon Cycle is a series of novels inspired by the stories of King Arthur, mixing historical elements with fantasy. Initially, the author and publisher planned for four books, but the project was halted after the first three, which became known as The Pendragon Trilogy. Later, the author added two more books, titled Pendragon and Grail, to expand the story and fill in gaps between the original trilogy’s events.

The series continues with the novel Avalon, taking place hundreds of years after the previous books, and a seventh installment, Aurelia, scheduled for release in January 2025. These books offer a fresh take on the Arthurian legends, reimagined in Roman Britain between the fourth and sixth centuries.

Boreing discussed the adaptation, explaining that The Pendragon Cycle represents the fulfillment of a decade-long effort to build something new and positive, rather than simply offering criticism. He noted that Lawhead’s books depict a powerful and authentic form of Christianity set against a backdrop of struggle and intrigue.

He explained that the show isn’t overly sweet or perfect, but realistically portrays the world we live in. He expressed his excitement to share this version, and the efforts of the talented cast and crew, with viewers of The Daily Wire.

This new series represents a major move for The Daily Wire, created by Jeremy Boreing and Ben Shapiro, into creating large-scale, scripted TV shows. Although they’ve made films and animated content previously, ‘The Pendragon Cycle’ is their biggest and most complex project to date.

Adapting a complex fantasy world built on strong beliefs for television is a huge undertaking, and viewers will soon discover how the show captures the essence of Lawhead’s creation.
