Although traditional newspapers may be facing an uncertain future, Peacock’s new series about a newspaper, titled “The Paper“, does not share the same fate. In fact, the streaming platform has already guaranteed a second season for this television spinoff of “The Office“, even before its premiere.
Peacock didn’t hold back on sharing news that Variety initially reported – they’ve already announced a second season for The Paper, even before its premiere on September 4th. Essentially, The Paper is getting another season before its first one has even begun airing on the streamer.
In simpler terms, this means that the second season of the show has been ordered before it even airs and even before any reviews are allowed, suggesting that NCBUniversal believes they have a hit on their hands, given that it’s co-created by Greg Daniels, who was also part of The Office. This quick renewal gives Daniels and showrunner Michael Koman the opportunity to release season two in a timely manner, which is a positive shift from traditional television where shows often take long breaks between seasons. It seems that a swift production for season two might indeed be the case.
Daniel told Variety that they “absolutely have concepts” planned for season two and have already been discussing potential stories for it. He added, “We’ve received great feedback from people within our company, journalists, and friends, but we’re unsure what the broader fanbase of The Office will think of it.
In simpler terms, the new show doesn’t continue the storyline from The Office, but it’s set in the same world. It once again focuses on a documentary team, with Oscar Nuñez returning as his character Oscar Martinez. The lead character in this series, titled The Paper, is Ned Sampson, played by Domhnall Gleeson, who becomes an unanticipated savior for a struggling newspaper in Toledo. Other notable cast members include Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Tim Key.
Tomorrow, Peacock plans to air all ten episodes from Season 1, a decision likely driven by both positive internal feedback and the way fans of “The Office” have embraced the series upon its arrival on streaming platforms. Admittedly, the trailer for “The Paper” didn’t spark our interest enough to consider subscription, but knowing that there will be a second season has definitely piqued our curiosity and encourages us to tune in.
