THE OFFICE Is Getting a Mexican Adaptation on Prime Video

As a seasoned gamer and a passionate fan of international media adaptations, I’m thrilled to witness yet another intriguing remake of a beloved classic – The Office. The Mexican version, La Oficina, promises an exciting twist with its focus on a soap company and the unconventional Jerónimo Ponce III.

The widely loved paper company is set to make another global debut. Amazon’s Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, and Gaz Alazraki’s Máquina Vega are collaborating on a Spanish-language adaptation of the popular series The Office, named La Oficina for its Spanish-speaking audience.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share my take on the captivating narrative that unfolds in the heart of Aguascalientes, Mexico, where our story revolves around Jerónimo Ponce III, the dynamic regional manager for Jabones Olimpo (Olimpo Soaps). In this vibrant setting, the office crew finds themselves grappling with the unique challenges of working under Ponce, a leader who, while not following the usual path, certainly keeps things interesting in the world of business.

Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios, shared his enthusiasm about creating our own interpretation of one of the most successful comedies ever made. He believes that the unique and bizarre subculture of Mexican office workers offers a rich and intriguing backdrop for this project. With Marcos Bucay and Gaz Alazraki, two of Mexico’s top comedy creators on board, Aguilar is confident that we will produce something extraordinary and leave fans of past adaptations astounded,” as reported by Variety.

Alazraki created and oversaw the direction of the critically acclaimed Mexican movie “Nosotros los Nobles“, which ranks as the second highest earning film in Mexico’s history. Additionally, he served as co-creator, executive producer, and director for the Netflix original Spanish comedy series “Club de Cuervos”, marking it as the first Spanish-language show produced by Netflix.

Alazraki’s production company has secured an exclusive agreement with Amazon MGM Studios, allowing them to create shows for this studio. This means that Alazraki will be responsible for writing, producing, and directing series produced by Amazon MGM Studios, such as the upcoming “La Oficina”. Notably, Alazraki is both the director and executive producer of “La Oficina”, with Marcos Bucay serving as the showrunner.

The office space, previously aired in Britain and America, will now be exclusively streamable on Amazon Prime Video across Latin America, Brazil, and Spain. A number of countries such as India, Poland, Finland, and Australia have adapted this popular show for their local audiences. Interestingly, Prime Video has already dabbled in adapting The Office before; the Australian version made its debut on the platform this month.

Alazraki has expressed his desire to rework ‘The Office’ since he purchased Ricky Gervais DVDs in 2003. He finds the humor and format incredibly bold, considering it the bravest comedy he’s ever encountered. Alazraki acknowledges Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant for giving them the opportunity to work on their creation, and he believes Amazon Prime Video is an ideal collaborator in making Mexicans laugh about workplace experiences in our country.

Information regarding the cast and premiere date for the Mexican adaptation of “The Office” hasn’t been disclosed yet since they’re still working on it. On the other hand, a spinoff series of the original American show titled “The Paper” is currently in production for Peacock.
