In a thrilling turn of events, Paramount has announced that they will be reviving the beloved The Naked Gun series with a fresh installment, slated for release in cinemas on August 1, 2025. This new chapter is being billed as a ‘legacy sequel’, and it introduces Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic character from the earlier movies.
Under the guidance of director Akiva Schaffer, known for SNL and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and production by Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and Ted, this latest production offers a contemporary twist on the comedy spoof genre that was initially established in 1988.
Accompanying Neeson in this cast is Pamela Anderson portraying a captivating character named Beth who has a mysterious aura, and Paul Walter Hauser playing Captain Ed Hocken Jr., the son of George Kennedy’s role from the initial movies. Additionally, the talented Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, Cody Rhodes, CCH Pounder, Busta Rhymes, and Eddy Yu are part of this impressive ensemble.
Here’s what the new trailer reveals
On June 16, a fresh trailer for The Naked Gun was unveiled by Paramount. In this new iteration, Liam Neeson as Drebin seems to delight in slapstick humor and gently satirize his well-known “specific skill set” from the Taken movies.
In one moment, Drebin remarks, “If you take a life out of vengeance, it’s irreversible,” then proceeds to employ dismembered limbs as his weaponry. In the next instance, he comments, “Impressive.” through a voiceover.
As an over-the-top enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the heartfelt tributes to the franchise’s rich history as Frank and Ed Jr. stand before plaques dedicated to their forefathers. In a hilarious nod to the past, Drebin grills a suspect who did 20 years for ‘man’s laughter,’ but it turns out it was actually ‘manslaughter.’ To which Drebin quips: “I guess that must have been one heck of a joke!
In the latest tale, Frank Drebin Junior serves as a prominent member of an elite police unit called Police Squad. The plot thickens when Beth’s sibling meets an untimely demise, putting the squad’s continued existence at stake. Should Drebin not crack the case, the department faces closure. As always, the story maintains its quirky humor, as Drebin repurposes a coffee shop restroom for ‘official police matters.’
The initial film titled “The Naked Gun: From the Police Squad’s Archive” came out in 1988 and was later continued with two more installments: “The Fear of Smell” (1991) and “The Ultimate Affront” (1994). An attempt at a reboot was made public in 2013, featuring Ed Helms, but it didn’t progress beyond the announcement. The original director, David Zucker, declined participation, stating that any new version would likely fall short of the original quality.
In 2017, there was a brief revamp he was part of, but that iteration too failed to progress. Currently, Zucker isn’t working on the project and expressed regret after seeing the trailer, stating, “Once I saw it, I couldn’t help but remember it.
