Critical Role’s second animated series, The Mighty Nein, is already a huge success thanks to its stunning animation, well-developed characters, and fantastic voice acting. Many of the most captivating moments from the first season weren’t in the original game – like seeing Ruby of the Sea perform on stage or watching Trent Ikithon’s disturbing experiments. These new and altered scenes really make the show stand out.
Although some changes were made to the story of The Mighty Nein, allowing the Critical Role team to refine things, these alterations led to one character, Yasha Nydoorin, being underused for most of the first season. While Yasha does finally join the rest of the party near the end of the season in “The Zadash Job,” her absence from important early events makes her feel disconnected and frustratingly distant from the group, despite being a core member from the beginning.
What Have the Critical Role Cast Said About Changes to The Mighty Nein for the Animated Series?
It’s commendable that the creators of Critical Role have been open about the adjustments made when turning The Mighty Nein into an animated series. Adapting hundreds of hours of gameplay into just a few dozen episodes naturally required some changes. For much of the first season, these changes have actually improved the show, allowing for things like quick travel between locations and glimpses into the schemes of villains like Trent Ikithon and Essek.

I’m really excited about the animated series, especially how they’re giving characters like Essek more focus early on – he didn’t get much attention in the original story! But honestly, I was a little disappointed by how little we see of Yasha throughout most of the first season. It felt like a major character was missing for a long time.
As someone who’s been following The Mighty Nein animated series, I have to say, it’s easy to get caught up in Yasha’s intense solo mission for the Luxon Beacon in the first season. But if you’re new to the story and haven’t seen the original campaign, you might be surprised to learn that Ashley Johnson’s character, the often-brooding barbarian Yasha Nydoorin, was actually one of the very first members of the group – she’s been with the Mighty Nein since the beginning!
How was Yasha Originally Introduced in The Mighty Nein Campaign?
When the Mighty Nein campaign began, Yasha wasn’t introduced as a solitary hunter. Instead, she appeared as the reserved and somewhat clumsy companion of Mollymauk Tealeaf. She was part of the Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities, where she worked as a protector and helper, and that’s how she first met and became friends with the lively fortune teller, Molly.
Yasha and Molly’s Campaign Friendship Is Lost in The Mighty Nein Series

Yasha, a character in The Mighty Nein campaign, remains somewhat private and physically imposing with her muscles and greatsword. However, she’s become more approachable and gentle. While still quiet and reserved, she’s endearingly sweet when she does speak. Early in The Mighty Nein, Yasha and Molly clearly have a close bond, having built a friendship through their time traveling and working together at the carnival.
The close friendship between Yasha and Molly is a heartwarming part of the campaign, but it doesn’t exist in the first season of The Mighty Nein animated series due to changes in how the story began. The series may also not have enough time to develop their relationship before events force them apart.
We Miss Yasha and Beau’s Flirtation

The way Yasha was introduced was changed between the live campaign and the first season of The Mighty Nein show, and this resulted in a significant loss: we don’t see any of the early, awkward flirting between Beau and Yasha that was a key part of their relationship at the carnival in the original campaign. While the first season of The Mighty Nein isn’t short on romance – we see early moments between Fjord and Jester, and even flashbacks of Caleb’s passionate past with Astrid and Wulf – that initial connection between Beau and Yasha is missing.
Removing Yasha from the carnival setting unfortunately eliminates the charming early flirtation between her and Beau, which many fans were enjoying—some even hoped to see Beau carried bridal-style by Yasha. This change significantly impacts both the Beau/Yasha and Molly/Yasha relationships. While the story aims for a more streamlined narrative, it also means losing those sweet initial interactions Yasha had with Jester, Caleb, and the rest of the Nein.
I’ve been following the story closely, and it looks like Molly, Caleb, Nott, Jester, Fjord, and Beau are really becoming the main heroes. It seems like Yasha is being introduced as someone completely new to this version of the tale, not as a character we already knew from the original campaign. Even if she joins the group before the first season ends, she’s presented as a mystery, which is a really interesting change!
Why Did Yasha’s Introduction Change for The Mighty Nein Animated Series?
![]()
Why was Yasha sometimes missing from scenes with the rest of the group in the first season of The Mighty Nein? It all comes down to Ashley Johnson’s filming schedule for the TV show Blindspot. She was working on both projects at the same time, and the demands of Blindspot often meant she couldn’t be there for certain episodes of the Critical Role campaign, leaving the party without their barbarian.
Given the huge challenge of fitting the entire second campaign of Critical Role into manageable, hour-long episodes, it’s understandable that the cast would simplify some plot points. Ashley Johnson explained to Geek and Sundry regarding changes to how her character, Yasha, was introduced:
The character’s overall journey remains consistent with the original story. However, we had the opportunity to enhance her introduction, adding more intrigue, depth, and tension. I’m particularly eager to see how fans of the previous campaign, who are familiar with Yasha and her gentle side, react to seeing her portrayed as a powerful and ruthless warrior. There’s a reason behind her strength, and I’m even more excited to see how new viewers respond to the story.
Although Yasha left the group after the carnival was destroyed in the original The Mighty Nein campaign, she still appeared in a significant number of episodes – 117 out of 141 – and was a core member of the Mighty Nein from the beginning. Removing her from the story does make it easier to follow, which is a good thing. The show also does a nice job of expanding on Yasha’s backstory earlier than the original campaign did, hinting at the mysterious mark on her neck and even showing a full flashback to her late wife.
Were the Changes Made to Yasha’s Character From The Mighty Nein Series to Campaign for the Better?
Now that the first season of The Mighty Nein is done, I’ve been thinking about Yasha’s story. Did the changes they made from the original campaign actually improve her introduction? I’m wondering if those intense fight scenes and the flashback with Zuala were worth losing the really interesting connection between Molly and Yasha, and the fact that we didn’t see anything develop between Beau and Yasha at all. It feels like something’s missing, you know?

The story of The Mighty Nein unfolds gradually, and I expect we’ll see much more of Yasha’s character develop over time—including a deeper look at her relationships with Beau and the rest of the group. However, first impressions matter, and as a fan of Yasha, it’s disappointing to see her story and connections with Beau and Molly not fully explored. For now, we can only be patient and see where the story goes.
The Mighty Nein season one is now streaming in full on Prime Video.
