Prime Video’s animated series, The Mighty Nein, based on Critical Role, is quickly becoming a standout show. It’s visually stunning and captures the heart, humor, and fantasy adventure that Critical Role and Dungeons & Dragons are known for, while also fearlessly exploring darker and more tragic themes. The fifth episode, “Little Spark,” powerfully brings the troubled wizard Caleb Widogast’s history to life, drawing from both the original game campaign and the The Mighty Nein Origins comics. This episode is even more brutal than some of the most shocking moments in Game of Thrones. The series doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of Caleb’s past, and even makes some clever changes that add depth to Liam O’Brien’s character, enriching both his history and present circumstances.

The Mighty Nein Uses Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins–Caleb Widogast Comic to Tell Its Tale
Caleb Widogast has one of the most deeply disturbing backstories in recent fiction. The fact that he burned his entire family – even his cat – alive is incredibly intense. We’ve learned about his past through flashbacks and in a comic book, but seeing it fully realized on screen is a whole new level of impactful and harrowing. It’s far more visceral and shocking than anything we could have imagined before.
The fifth episode of The Mighty Nein, titled “Little Spark,” covers much of the story from The Mighty Nein Origins: Caleb Widogast comic, but in a condensed way. Several scenes from the comic appear to have directly inspired shots in the episode, including Caleb’s time at the Soltryce Academy, how Trent Ikithon brought him into the Volstrucker, the magical residuum tattoos used to boost abilities, his relationship with Astrid and Eadwulf, and the tragic event of Caleb using his powers to kill his family and his cat, Frumpkin, in a fire.
Because it’s an animated show, the story can include even more emotional depth and complexity. The way the flashbacks are woven together with scenes of Caleb being interrogated and tortured – and his second struggle to control his fire powers, which echoes the tragedy of his family’s death – makes Caleb’s backstory incredibly powerful in The Mighty Nein.
One Minor Change to Caleb’s Backstory in The Mighty Nein Makes the Coming Fights More Personal
The animated series The Mighty Nein builds upon the original story, and one of the best things an adaptation can do is develop the narrative further. A small change made to Caleb’s past involves his first encounter with Trent Ikithon. This change significantly impacts Caleb’s relationship with a key villain in the story. In the series, Trent Ikithon travels to Caleb’s village to evaluate him for admission to the Soltryce Academy, making their connection more direct and personal. This is a new detail added to Caleb’s history through The Mighty Nein series.

Trent Ikithon actively seeking out Caleb for the Soltryce Academy fundamentally changes how we see their connection. In The Mighty Nein animated series, this gesture establishes Trent as the one who grants Caleb his greatest desire: the opportunity to develop his magical abilities. This initial encounter creates a strong bond between them. The series portrays their relationship as more than just a teacher-student dynamic; Trent Ikithon truly rescues Caleb, offering him a path into the magical world he’s always dreamed of. Trent provides what Caleb believes is his first genuine opportunity. This deeper, more personal connection will undoubtedly amplify the emotional impact of everything that unfolds in The Mighty Nein.

The Mighty Nein‘s Big Change to Caleb’s Backstory Makes Him More Responsible for His Dark Past
Beyond how Caleb and Trent Ikithon first met, the story significantly alters a key part of Caleb’s history in Critical Role. This change is both substantial and heartbreaking.

The comic The Mighty Nein Origins: Caleb Widogast reveals a different story behind Caleb’s tragic act of killing his parents. It wasn’t a spontaneous decision, but rather the result of manipulation by Trent Ikithon, who magically altered Caleb’s memories. Trent made Caleb believe his parents were speaking against the Dwendalian Empire, and then convinced him to kill them. However, in the main The Mighty Nein story, things are different. So far, there’s no evidence of memory manipulation or knowledge of any wrongdoing. Instead, Caleb simply trusts Trent’s claim that his parents were traitors, seemingly willingly carrying out the murders due to the powerful influence of the magical teachings at the Academy. This changes who is responsible for the deaths, placing the blame more directly on Caleb himself.

It’s still possible Caleb was tricked by Trent Ikithon, similar to what happened in the Critical Role comics. However, Caleb seems to think he acted willingly based on someone’s promise, which makes the guilt and pain he feels even stronger. If Caleb has changed to the point where he didn’t even question his parents’ murder in The Mighty Nein, then his journey to self-forgiveness and healing will likely be more difficult than ever before.
We Have to Offer Love to The Mighty Nein’s Beautiful Depiction of a Triad

It’s important to highlight the wonderful and respectful portrayal of the polyamorous relationship between Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf in The Mighty Nein. The series shows them loving each other completely and equally, just like a traditional couple, and gives thoughtful attention to each connection within the triad. This kind of representation is uncommon in mainstream media, and we commend The Mighty Nein for bringing it to life so beautifully.
