The MCU Hits a High Point on Disney+ With Its Best Release Yet

A new Marvel series, Wonder Man, is coming to Disney+, and initial reactions are very positive – some are saying it could be one of the strongest Marvel projects in a long time.

Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the new miniseries centers on actors Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, who are hoping to be cast in a reimagining of the movie Wonder Man. Andrew Guest is also the showrunner.

Wonder Man is coming to Disney+ on January 27th as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six. All eight episodes of the series, which will be released under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, will be available at once.

The show’s release was pushed back several times because of problems with production and strikes by the writers’ and actors’ unions. Initially intended for the 2023–24 television season, it was moved from December 2025 to January 2026 to avoid clashing with holiday shows. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said he was frustrated with the delay, especially since other similar shows came out while Wonder Man was on hold, making Marvel appear to be reacting to what others were doing rather than setting the pace.

Critics are praising Wonder Man for its fresh approach. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a 96% rating. Simon Gallagher from ComicBook.com wrote that the series is “a pretty provocative exercise in not ticking boxes: without getting too far into spoilers, despite hints that it could all break out into a conventional superhero slug-fest with a big battle climax, Wonder Man thumbs its nose at the very idea.” Carson Timar of ButteredPopcorn said, “Wonder Man is tediously basic, but never embarrassing on execution.”

Many viewers have praised the show for its intimate, character-driven narrative. In a review for Awards Buzz, Abe Friedtanzer noted that the series, even with just one season, shows real potential, especially in a particularly memorable flashback episode that stays with you long after watching.

According to Eric Goldman on YouTube, the show centers around an actor trying to make it big who also has superpowers, but isn’t a typical superhero. He describes it as a more intimate story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and believes it’s a compelling show with a strong focus on the relationship between its two lead actors and their excellent performances.

Nick Schager of The Daily Beast described the film as a playful parody of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, noting it’s less funny than similar comedies but surprisingly heartfelt thanks to its lead actors. Joonatan Itkonen, however, gave it a perfect score, calling it a wonderful experience, even if it’s a standalone project, and saying it reminded him of what he originally loved about Marvel films.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about the early buzz around Wonder Man. It feels like Disney+ has been a bit hit or miss with their MCU shows lately, but this one could genuinely be something special – a real standout after a few years of projects that haven’t quite landed.

Yoon Kye-sang seems perfectly cast in his new role, but fame has a way of exposing everything. Don’t miss #WonderMan, a series with eight episodes, debuting January 27th at 6 PM Pacific Time exclusively on Disney+.
