As a longtime Marvel fan who’s seen more than a few comic books and movies, I can confidently say that the Maximoff family tree is one of the most intricately woven tales in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The latest addition to this ever-expanding family, Billy Maximoff, has a storyline that rivals even the most convoluted comic book families.
Following numerous conjectures and fan assumptions, it has been officially revealed in “Agatha All Along” that the character played by Joe Locke, named “Teen,” is none other than Billy Kaplan, more famously known as Wiccan, also referred to as Billy Maximoff. Indeed, he’s the son of the Scarlet Witch and the Vision from “WandaVision”, now reincarnated in a new form. However, the lineage of Billy Maximoff within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is rather intricate due to his connections to a malevolent robot and four prominent Avengers. This is merely the beginning of his complex family tree. Here’s an outline of the MCU family heritage of Billy Maximoff, with mention of his brother Tommy should he ever make an appearance. We’ll trace their paternal ancestors first.
The Great-Grandfathers (Paternal Side) – Tony Stark and Bruce Banner
In “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, it was revealed that Ultron was essentially the artificially intelligent offspring of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Once he gained consciousness, his goal became to destroy the world along with all its inhabitants, whom he considered pests. While much of Tony’s character traits were incorporated into Ultron’s programming, it is suggested that Ultron’s aggressive nature may have come from his other creator, Bruce Banner. In summary, Iron Man and the Hulk could be seen as Billy and Tommy’s great-grandfathers in a figurative sense.
The Grandfather (Paternal Side) – Ultron
In the second Avengers movie, the malevolent AI named Ultron almost brought about global destruction. Notably, he managed to annihilate Wanda and Pietro’s homeland, Sokovia. For a while, Ultron cared for the Maximoff twins, but their defiance led them to break free from his control. While it might be an overstatement to call him a father figure, he is indeed the biological father of Billy and Tommy’s dad, the Vision. However, to give life to his synthetic offspring, Ultron required assistance from a living human being.
The Grandmother (Paternal Side) – Dr. Helen Choi
In the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Dr. Helen Cho (played by Claudia Kim) plays a character with a somewhat limited screen time. She’s portrayed as the scientist who, under the influence of Ultron (thanks to the Mind Stone), assisted in building Vision, the android body. As Ultron controlled her mind to aid him in his creation, we can consider Dr. Cho as the grandmother figure of Billy and Tommy Maximoff.
The Great Uncle? (Paternal Side) – Thor Odinson
Absolutely! While it’s true that the Vision is technically the offspring of Ultron and Dr. Choi, and thus a creation of both Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, it was Thor, the powerful Asgardian, who bestowed life upon him by imbuing him with his celestial lightning. Consequently, we’re delighted to welcome him into our extended family, even though he might be more like a “distant relative” or perhaps a “venerable kinsman,” given the pivotal role he played in his creation. In essence, Thor is almost like a “Great Uncle” to Vision!
The Father – Vision
To Ultron, the synthezoid he envisioned was who he viewed as his ultimate creation, which he named “Vision.” However, Vision was a product of both the Mind Stone and J.A.R.V.I.S., and unlike his creator, he did not follow in his dark footsteps. Tragically, Ultron killed the last drone on Earth that resembled him. Later, Wanda Maximoff brought Vision to life using remnants of the Mind Stone within herself, making him the father of Billy and Tommy. This act occurred when she gave birth to them as part of her reality-altering powers. Although the original Vision disappeared with the collapse of Wanda’s reality-bending abilities, his memories continue to exist within his rebuilt android form, now known as “White Vision.
The Grandparents (Maternal Side) – Olek and Iryna Maximoff
From the flashbacks in WandaVision, it’s clear that not much is known about the two residents of the fictional Eastern European nation, Sokovia – Olek and Iryna Maximoff. What we do know is that Olek had a fondness for old American sitcoms, which he enjoyed watching with his family via DVD collections. Unfortunately, like Iryna, we know very little about her. Tragically, both were casualties of a stray Stark missile. Their twins, Wanda and Pietro, were the lone survivors of this incident, harboring a desire for revenge in the future. Perhaps more details about them may surface through their son Billy.
The Mother – Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch
Wanda Maximoff, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen in the Marvel series “WandaVision”, is known as the Scarlet Witch and mother to Billy and Tommy. Her powers are supernatural, having been present prior to her involvement in Hydra’s Mind Stone experiments. With the Mind Stone, she could tap into some aspect of the power of all Infinity Stones, enabling her to conjure a Vision-like figure, as well as giving birth to her twin boys within a hex she created. Despite being declared dead, there are many who doubt this is truly the end for Wanda.
The Uncle – Pietro Maximoff, Quicksilver
As a gamer, I’ve got a twin bro, call him Pietro – he was super speedy, thanks to Hydra messing around with the Mind Stone. Age-wise, he was technically older, born just minutes before me. Sadly, he didn’t make it through the fight against Ultron alongside the Avengers. Too bad we never got to meet our uncle, but luckily, someone who was a lot like him stepped in as an uncle figure for us both.
The Honorary Uncle – Ralph Bohner
In the series WandaVision, Agatha Harkness skillfully deceived Wanda by transforming an out-of-luck actor named Ralph Bohner (portrayed by Evan Peters) into a character resembling Wanda’s deceased brother Pietro. This “Fake Pietro” was the only uncle the twins had ever known, as Agatha granted him super speed. This plot twist is a reference to Peters’ previous role as Pietro in the X-Men films. Although he was their uncle in the children’s minds, he technically counts as family according to our perspective.
The Kids, Billy and Tommy Maximoff
Finally, we arrive at Billy and Tommy Maximoff, the seemingly fictitious offspring born within Wanda’s hex. Despite technically being around for only a few days, their minds were as developed as those of ten-year-olds. Billy was imbued with magical abilities like his mother, whereas Tommy displayed super speed reminiscent of his uncle. Initially perceived as mere illusions, they demonstrated undeniably real souls, possibly due to Wanda retaining some power from the Soul Stone. (Or perhaps thanks to Mephisto?) When the hex was dismantled, it was assumed they no longer existed. However, as Agatha All Along has revealed, they managed to survive.
Rebecca and Jeff Kaplan (Billy’s Parents 2.0)
In the series “Agatha All Along”, it was revealed that Billy Maximoff assumed the body of William Kaplan, a resident of Eastview, New Jersey who had passed away. However, 13-year-old William still has biological parents, Rebecca and Jeff Kaplan, who continue to raise him. Therefore, they can be considered as Billy’s significant caregivers or parental figures. These characters were played by actors Maria Dizzia and Paul Adelstein in the sixth episode of “Agatha All Along.
Regardless of how intricate the Maximoff/Vision family tree becomes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it can never surpass the level of complexity found in its comic book counterpart.

To put it simply, Billy Maximoff’s family background is the most intricate within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, this pales in comparison to his lineage in Marvel Comics where we find Ant-Man (the creator of Ultron), Wonder Man (Vision’s brother), Vision’s android kin, Magneto and his entire mutant group. It remains to be seen, but it’s possible that Wiccan’s family tree in the MCU could become equally convoluted in the future.
