‘The Matrix 5’ Is Still Moving Forward as Drew Goddard Steps In to Write and Direct

Despite a period of quiet, the next installment of The Matrix series is still in development, according to writer Drew Goddard.

In a recent ScreenRant interview, writer Drew Goddard provided an update on the potential fifth Matrix film. He confirmed the project is still in development and that he’s currently working on the script. He stated he’s dedicated to the writing process and will share more information when he’s finished.

In April 2024, Warner Bros. confirmed they were working on another Matrix movie, with Greg Goddard set to write and direct. However, there haven’t been any news updates since then, which led some fans to wonder if the project had been scrapped.

The Matrix franchise is entering a new era with a film that won’t be directed by the Wachowskis – a first for the series. The original trilogy – The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions – was incredibly influential in science fiction and earned a total of $1.8 billion around the world. Many fans still consider the 1999 original, starring Keanu Reeves, to be the best film in the series.

The most recent Matrix film, Resurrections, released in 2021, wasn’t a success with critics or at the box office. Despite costing $190 million to make, it only earned $37 million domestically. Reviews from audiences were also mixed, with a CinemaScore of B- and a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many felt the new movie didn’t measure up to the original films.

Drew Goddard is a highly experienced filmmaker, known for directing movies like The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. He’s also written for several popular films, including Cloverfield and World War Z, and has contributed to television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, and Lost. Currently, he’s working on The Matrix 5, as well as the screenplay for Project Hail Mary and a new western film under the direction of Ridley Scott.

The creators of the original Matrix films, the Wachowskis, are not participating in the new movie. Their last collaboration was the 2015 film, Jupiter Ascending, and there are no signs they plan to be involved in this latest installment.

Currently, a fifth Matrix movie is still being written. Details like the release date, cast, and story haven’t been announced yet. However, writer Drew Goddard has confirmed to ScreenRant that the project is still in development.
