‘The Majority of the Studio’s on It’: Bethesda Gives an Update on The Elder Scrolls 6

Do you recall when The Elder Scrolls 6 was first revealed? What year do you think that was? Take a moment to consider.

Bethesda first revealed the game with a short cinematic trailer back at E3 in 2018. Surprisingly, that was over seven years ago, and we haven’t seen or heard anything about it since.

We previously predicted this would likely be a PlayStation 5 game. Now, we’d be very surprised if it doesn’t come out on the PlayStation 6 when that console is released.

Bethesda has stated they announced the game simply to be upfront with fans and stop the spread of rumors. They never actually promised a specific release date or timeframe.

So, what’s the real status of The Elder Scrolls 6? Bethesda recently gave Game Informer a brief update, and while the game is still a ways off, they’re confident development is proceeding smoothly.

“It’s progressing really well,” says studio boss Todd Howard.

Most of our work happens in Vancouver, but we consistently have projects running concurrently. We’re accustomed to having overlapping development phases, and we spend a significant amount of time in pre-production to ensure we’re confident in our projects. It’s all part of the process, really.

Howard admitted the process is taking time, saying, “Everyone would like to see things move more quickly – even much more quickly – but we’re focused on doing it correctly.”

For a while, it hasn’t been entirely clear what the company was planning to release next. While Starfield launched a couple of years ago and there’s been talk of a new Fallout game, management says the team is now fully focused on the next installment in the Skyrim series.

“It feels like ages since we’ve shared an update, according to what everyone online is saying,” says studio director Angela Browder, but she’s eager to share that a lot of exciting work has been happening recently.

Technology has come so far since we last tackled a project like this. Honestly, sometimes what’s happening now feels unbelievable – someone like my old character, Angela from Skyrim, wouldn’t have been able to imagine anything like it.

It sounds like development on The Elder Scrolls 6 is going well. The big question now is simply when we’ll finally get to see it in action.

Howard has mentioned he likes releasing games unexpectedly, and this suggests that when The Elder Scrolls 6 is finally announced, it will likely be released soon after.

So, when do you predict The Elder Scrolls 6 will finally be released? For now, you might as well plan on playing Skyrim for another six years – let us know your thoughts in the comments!
