The MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Ride Into a New Western Series on MGM+

For nearly thirty years, Westerns were the most popular type of movie in Hollywood, much like superhero films are today. One of the biggest Western hits was The Magnificent Seven, released in 1960. This film was based on the Japanese movie The Seven Samurai and led to several sequels, a television series in the 1990s, and a remake in 2016, as well as many similar movies. Now, the story of The Magnificent Seven is returning to the Old West with a new 8-episode series coming to MGM+. Tim Kring, who helped create the show Heroes, will be the showrunner, and filming is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026.

The film The Magnificent Seven is a new take on a classic Western story, taking place during the rough and tumble 1880s American frontier. When a peaceful Quaker village is attacked by hired guns working for a cruel landowner who wants their land, the villagers hire seven skilled but troubled mercenaries for protection. As the mercenaries prepare to defend the village against overwhelming forces, they begin to question whether using violence is right when protecting a community committed to peace.

According to MGM’s Michael Wright, the new series created by Tim Kring, Donald De Line, Larry Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman successfully captures the spirit of classic westerns while paying tribute to the original film. He noted that it explores enduring themes of strength in numbers against injustice and the possibility of redemption for imperfect characters who dedicate themselves to helping others.

The remake differs from the original by featuring a community of Quakers, instead of a Mexican village, as those needing help. This change occurred when relations between the U.S. and Mexico were strong. The original film depicted the Mexican villagers as courageous but lacking the means to defend themselves, positioning the heroes more as trainers and leaders than rescuers. However, given current sensitivities, the portrayal of the heroes as ‘White Saviors’ feels problematic, making the switch to a group of peaceful, religious people a sensible update.

No matter how it’s presented, the title “Magnificent Seven” always generates excitement. The name has become so well-known that any group of seven – whether it’s a band, a cast of actors, or a superhero team – often gets called that. But will the original film still resonate with audiences in 2026? We’re about to find out.
