The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, created by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is scheduled to open its doors to the public on September 22, 2026, in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park. The museum will explore the power of visual storytelling – things like illustrations and films – and how these narratives bring people together.

Exploring the Human Experience Through Art
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will house an impressive collection of over 40,000 artworks displayed across thirty-five galleries. These galleries will explore universal themes like love, family, and adventure through various forms of art, including illustrations, comics, and movie memorabilia like posters and concept art. The museum aims to show how stories both reflect and influence the way we live.
George Lucas explained that the museum aims to demonstrate how stories function like modern myths, giving people a framework for understanding the world around them. Mellody Hobson highlighted that the museum’s collection is for everyone, describing it as “art created by and for the people.”

A New Landmark in Exposition Park
Designed by architect Ma Yansong of MAD and featuring gardens by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, the new museum spans 300,000 square feet. It includes galleries, two theaters, a library, dining options, and spaces for the community. The museum is located on an 11-acre site and also adds more parkland to Exposition Park.

The Collection and Archives
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art features a diverse collection of art from throughout history. It showcases pieces by renowned artists such as Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Kadir Nelson, N.C. Wyeth, Judy Baca, Jessie Willcox Smith, and Maxfield Parrish, among others.
The museum showcases comic art from creators like Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Alison Bechdel, Winsor McCay, Chris Ware, and R. Crumb. It also includes photography by Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
One of the biggest attractions is the Lucas Archives, a collection of models, props, and artwork from George Lucas’s films. It gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how he created his famous stories.
