I’m sure many gated communities are pleasant and filled with good people, but I don’t concern myself with figuring out which ones are which. It’s truly terrifying when people hide behind religion to excuse violence. Based on the trailer, the three innocent men in the movie The Gates are in a really difficult situation. No one will likely believe their story about James Van Der Beek’s popular, almost god-like pastor committing a murder.
In addition to its trailer, here’s the full synopsis of The Gates:
Burr’s new film, The Gates, is a follow-up to his first movie, the supernatural thriller Muse. The Gates centers on three college students – Derek, Kevin, and Tyon – whose road trip takes a dangerous turn when they accidentally drive through a secluded, gated community. After witnessing a murder, they find themselves trapped and accused, and their different viewpoints begin to drive them apart. Meanwhile, James Van Der Beek delivers a captivating and chilling performance as the charismatic leader who controls everything within the community.
So, I just heard about this new movie, The Gates, directed by John Burr, who did Muse. It stars Mason Gooding – you might recognize him from the recent Scream movies – along with Algee Smith, who was fantastic in Judas and the Black Messiah, and Keith Powers from The Perfect Find. It’s about these three friends and their road trip that takes a seriously dark turn. It’s a bit bittersweet because it’s one of the last projects from James Van Der Beek, who sadly passed away way too young. He also has a role coming up in the Legally Blonde prequel, Elle, on Prime Video. As a fan of his work, it’s good to know we’ll get to see him act again, even if it’s just a couple more times.
We hope to avoid being stuck inside the gates ourselves, but we’re really rooting for the young men to get out. And we’d love to see James Van Der Beek back on the big screen for one final appearance. We might get to see all of this happen when The Gates comes to select theaters on March 13th.
