Exciting news: Season 3 of The Last of Us has been greenlit! This revelation came before the premiere of the much-awaited second season on HBO. According to Deadline, the production company hasn’t given a definitive answer yet if season 3 could potentially be the end of the series.
Originally, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin expressed their intention to wrap up the story over a span of four seasons. The second season, scheduled for release on April 13, consists of seven episodes.
It’s clear that the creators understood that additional episodes were essential to properly conclude the epic saga of The Last of Us. In fact, Francesca Orsi, head of HBO Drama Series and Films, hinted at her immense pride in the exceptional work they believe has been done on the second season of The Last of Us.
She also hinted that everyone involved, from actors to crew, have given a “remarkable” performance in the upcoming second season. The team is “excited” to continue the magic of Craig and Neil’s narrative into what promises to be another “spectacular” third season.
It seems likely that the studio decided to continue the show for another season even before the second season premiered, given the incredible popularity it achieved during its initial run. During the first season’s broadcast, it was announced that the average viewership exceeded a staggering 30 million viewers on HBO.
On prior occasions, the studio has re-upped a series ahead of its previous season’s debut. For example, HBO greenlit The White Lotus for its fourth season before the launch of the third installment. The third season of this popular show garnered massive success and shattered the viewership record that had been set by the program.
In a statement to Deadline, Druckmann shared that The Last of Us series is an adaptation of the cherished video game, serving as the pinnacle of his professional journey so far. The narrative unfolds in a post-cataclysmic setting.
Following a worldwide catastrophe brought on by a pandemic that wipes out human civilization, a tough survivor assumes control over a 14-year-old girl who could be mankind’s sole remaining chance, as suggested by the official summary. This intriguing series features Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in leading roles.
The Last of Us is available to stream on Max.
