As a passionate movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on the highly anticipated return of “The Last of Us” for its second season. This time around, the show is diving into half of Naughty Dog’s 2020 game masterpiece, “The Last of Us Part II.” Given the complexity of its revenge-driven plot, shifting player character perspectives, and the expansive scope of “Part II,” this adaptation promises to be a challenging endeavor.
As the tale of “TLOU” continues to unfold on the silver screen, we should brace ourselves for more deviations from the original than faithful recreations. To help you prepare, let’s explore the major moments and game elements that “The Last of Us” season two is adapting from the games.
The Last of Us Season 2’s Biggest Elements and Adapted Moments From the Games – Episode 1, “Future Days”
The Introduction of Abby
In “Future Days,” the second season of “The Last of Us” pays tribute to the cinematic elements of the second game while carving its own unique path, as some scenes and sequences unfold at varied moments. The initial scene showcases Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), grieving her father amidst a row of graves alongside her ex-Firefly comrades, which is set in an open field adjacent to St. Mary’s Hospital in Salt Lake City – a location that may ring a bell for those who recall the season 1 finale.
In the game, this specific event doesn’t occur, but rather, we encounter Abby alongside her WLF companions following their entry into Jackson. The show quickly immerses us into the storyline by introducing the antagonist without delay. (Or, she can be seen as a secondary protagonist based on one’s interpretation of the content.) In the series, it becomes immediately obvious why Abby is there: to seek revenge for her father.
Ellie & Dina’s Love Story
In the midst of the turmoil in the second game, the heart of the story lies within the blossoming relationship between Ellie and Dina. Fortunately, the series beautifully portrays this aspect extensively. The foundation for this narrative thread can be traced back to season 1, episode 6 titled “Kin”. It is here that Ellie first notices a girl who looks like Dina in the Jackson cafeteria. This girl gives Ellie a curious look and later yells, “What?” to startle her.
In this episode, several scenes featuring Ellie and Dina from the early stages of the second game are remarkably well-depicted. These include their patrol on horseback in a blizzard, clearing out an infected supermarket, and the iconic Jackson dance. Notably, the Jackson dance scene has been reimagined for the show as the 2029 New Year’s Eve Party.
Comparing the dance scene from the show to its game version emphasizes the show’s dedication to keeping a unique and memorable moment intact. This scene has left a lasting impression on long-term fans. The scene is reminiscent of the actual event, right down to the fairy lights adorning the hall, the specific music playing, and Isabella Merced’s powerful delivery of Dina’s iconic line: “Oh Ellie, they should be terrified of you,” culminating in their first kiss.
In the game, Seth from Tipsy Bison insulted Ellie and Dina, but in the show, Joel’s reaction to Seth isn’t a forceful push as it was before. Instead, he physically overpowers Seth by punching him, creating a dramatic and victorious scene.
