Among the standout episodes from the first season of “The Last of Us” is episode three, titled “Long, Long Time.” Unlike previous episodes that delved into Joel, Ellie, the fungus, and the apocalypse, this one shifted its focus to two characters from the games: Bill and Frank. Although these characters had a history in the game series, the show’s episode dedicated to them provided viewers with a profound look into their hearts and a deeper understanding of their complex personalities. “Long, Long Time” served as a thoughtful exploration of love, life, and mortality, earning it a place among fans’ favorite episodes of the season. Given this, fans are naturally curious about whether future bottle episodes like this will be featured in “The Last of Us” season two.
At a press conference, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed that there will indeed be more standalone episodes like “The Last of Us” season one’s “Left Behind,” when speaking with TopMob and other journalists. While they affirmed the presence of such episodes in season two, it wasn’t to intentionally replicate the success of Bill and Frank’s episode. Instead, it seems that these bottle episodes are part of their larger narrative planning for the series.
When asked for additional information about the upcoming bottle episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2, Mazin replied, “Neil and I discussed ensuring that we didn’t simply create an episode based on the popular Bill and Frank episode from before. Instead, it must unfold naturally. However, I can confirm that there is a striking episode in this season directed by Neil, which is unique but shares similarities, as it stands alone and was necessary to be included.

The Story of Bill and Frank in THE LAST OF US Is So Much Bigger Than Them
A “bottle episode” is a TV show episode set in a single location and usually involving only a few characters. These episodes often have a standalone story, though they can influence the overall plot. They are ideal for exploring specific aspects of a world or character in greater depth because their narrative is self-contained.
In the first season of “The Last of Us,” characters Bill and Frank were given a focused episode, deepening our understanding of them from the game. The series has the potential for more standalone stories like this. One possibility could be a single-episode focus on Abby. Abby is a character fans become acquainted with in the games, but not yet introduced in the show. An entire episode dedicated to Abby might help “The Last of Us” viewers, especially those who haven’t played the video games, relate and connect more deeply with this essential character.
In an exciting update, it has been revealed that the character Eugene from “The Last of Us” games will make his way into the TV series. Actor Joe Pantoliano is set to bring Eugene to life on screen, implying he could have a significant role in the show’s narrative. Previously, Eugene only appeared in photos and memories within “The Last of Us: Part II,” but this time around, he will be a fully-fledged character who plays a crucial role in exploring Joel and Ellie’s bond more deeply. Given this development, it seems likely that an episode dedicated to Eugene may be in store for season two of “The Last of Us.
In this exceptional episode, the character we’re likely to encounter is bound to provide an emotionally stirring examination, and there’s a strong chance it will move us to tears.
The Last of Us season two premieres on Sunday, April 13.
