The Last of Us Season 2 Reveals W.L.F. and Scars’ Battle for Seattle

In the debut season of “The Last of Us“, Joel and Ellie navigated their way through perilous encounters with various dangerous groups spread across the nation. From FEDRA in Boston, the resistance in Kansas City, to cannibalistic Christians in Colorado, and Fireflies in Salt Lake City, the series’ post-apocalyptic landscape is teeming with numerous organizations, each driven by their unique agendas and methods of survival. The second season has brought forth two more significant factions from Seattle – the W.L.F. and the “Scars”. Let me explain what these two contrasting groups are about and their objectives as portrayed in “The Last of Us”.

What Is the W.L.F. on The Last of Us?

After Joel eliminated the Fireflies in Salt Lake City, it appeared he had dismantled their entire group. With no surviving members from the Firefly family left, Abby and her companions chose to journey towards Seattle. They were aware of an “organization” there led by a man named Isaac. The intriguing second episode of season two bestowed that organization with an acronym: W.L.F. Given the combat skills, orderliness, and tracking abilities Abby and her friends demonstrated while pursuing Joel, it was evident that the W.L.F. had effectively trained the ex-Fireflies.

Episode three unveiled that W.L.F., or Washington Liberation Front, is the name of the group. Initially, it was a modest regional force opposing FEDRA, a type of organization we encountered in Kansas City earlier on. However, by the end of episode three, it became apparent that the W.L.F. has significantly expanded in size and power based on Dina’s information. A vast number of soldiers were seen marching through Seattle’s streets accompanied by tanks, a clear indication of a well-organized military campaign. Furthermore, they have patrols and guards stationed all over the city, suggesting a robust operation.

Even though we haven’t encountered Isaac personally, he transformed the W.L.F. into Seattle’s dominant militia with immense power. However, his faction doesn’t seem remarkably distinct from the one it superseded. Moreover, it appears that the W.L.F. encounters similar issues that FEDRA faced previously. In spite of their considerable arsenal, they failed to win over all Seattle residents to their side. Another unique group is present in Seattle as well.

Who Are the “Scars” on The Last of Us?

Episode three further delved into another significant group from the video game ‘The Last of Us Part II’, which hasn’t been named in the show yet. This group, however, is officially known as the Seraphites, but are more casually referred to as “Scars” due to the religious markings they make on their faces.

In the world of “The Last of Us”, the group known as the Scars abide by the teachings and wisdom of a deceased woman called The Prophet, who passed away a decade ago. Unlike W.L.F., whose members wear military uniforms, the Scars opt for modest, unified green robes. They eschew contemporary technology and instead craft their weapons from basic materials like hammers, bows, and arrows, preferring these over firearms. Instead of using walkie-talkies, they employ whistles for communication, a unique code they’ve created to ensure their survival.

In episode three of “The Last of Us” season two, the primitive Scars were portrayed as more than just ideological adversaries to the militaristic W.L.F. The Scars we encountered were attempting to avoid conflict with the W.L.F., but unfortunately, they couldn’t escape their fate. A group known as “Wolves” arrived and brutally killed every member of the Scar community, including the children.

Why might W.L.F. act that way in “The Last of Us”? What potential threat could individuals who talk about a Prophet and use hammers for protection, while quietly traversing the woods to evade danger, potentially present to a powerfully-structured group commandeering tanks and causing chaos in Seattle’s streets?

HBO’s The Last of Us has a lot more to reveal about both.
