The Last of Us Season 2 Gets Deaf-Friendly

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be among the first to experience an American Sign Language (ASL) version of the premier episodes of highly anticipated series like “The Last of Us” season two! This Emmy-winning video game adaptation will have ASL streaming available for each episode as they are released weekly.

For the very first time, HBO makes its original shows accessible in American Sign Language (ASL) alongside their release, which can be streamed on Max. Additionally, you’ll find ASL versions of Warner Bros. films such as “Barbie,” “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire,” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” This broadening of content is aimed at enhancing the accessibility of these streaming services for everyone to enjoy.

Daniel Durant, renowned for his role as Leo Rossi in the Oscar-winning movie “CODA,” will present episodes of “The Last of Us” using American Sign Language (ASL). Joining him is Leila Hanaumi, who received critical praise for her performance in “Barbie” with ASL. Notably, “Barbie” was the initial film on Max to incorporate ASL interpretation. Additionally, Hanaunmi directed the first season of “The Last of Us” using American Sign Language.

Naomi Waibel, Senior Vice President of Global Product Management at WBD, expressed her excitement about growing our ASL program. She announced that we will premier our first HBO original series in ASL using The Last of Us. This launch allows the show to resonate genuinely and be fully accessible for Deaf viewers. It’s another significant stride towards our aim of providing an inclusive streaming service.

Don’t fret if you’re behind; the first season of The Last of Us in American Sign Language can be streamed from March 31. The second season premieres on April 13 at 6:00 PM Pacific Time.
