Ellie inquires subtly, “Did you… eliminate all Fireflies?” To which Joel confesses everything, including the fate of Marlene.

In a turn of events, if crafting a remedy had claimed your life, Ellie would have deemed it a sacrifice worth making, as it would’ve enabled her to achieve her mission. However, this wasn’t a choice Joel could entertain. He tearfully admits, “I did what I did because I cherish you.” And he makes it clear that given the same circumstances, he wouldn’t hesitate to make the same decision again.

During their discussion, a scene from earlier in the episode featuring Joel and his father reappears as a sort of premonition.
